    Chromehounds

Game » consists of 4 releases. Released Jun 29, 2006

With dozens of parts to choose from, players are able to create their own giant mech. With a built in squad mechanic, Chromehounds' biggest draw was it's persistent online play.

Either your love it or hate it.

Chromehounds, debuted a few years back as an Xbox 360 game only, created to be a technical mech simulation, with some key team elements. The back story behind Chromehounds is fairly bland to be honest, that will barely draw your attention at the most. The single player is more of a tutorial if you will, for the multiplayer you will be embarking. In the single player campaign, you are a mercenary who will fight for certain factions, and blah, blah, blah.

The single player, quite bluntly is total crap, but it does show you some key aspects of the game, and gives you a few decent parts to go into the multiplayer. Now the online multiplayer is the main thing about Chromehounds, where you can join certain squads, have ranks, and a persistent map, where you join a faction, fight for them, take over territory (which takes forever), then the capital of an opposing faction.  Now you can't fight yourself, until you join a squad, which is big in this game, where it's motto is "Hunt like a pack, or die like a dog", that is very true, you will not be able to play this game without your companions, in which they can play multiple roles for you, such as a commander, heavy gunner, sniper, assault, etc.

The 3 Factions in the multiplayer are..
    Tarakia
    Sal Kar
    Morskoj

Each faction has different equipment you can buy (there are roughly 100+ parts to buy in all), some heavy-weight, light-weight, or middle. And there are some pretty extreme differences between a light-weight and a heavy-weight. Overall everything is fairly balanced, between the howitzers, machine guns, and etc. There are so many combinations, that it is pretty mind-blowing.

Now to talk about the gameplay, you either love it, or hate it. It is a fairly slow paced game, where it may take 10 minutes just to prepare for a match, proposing who goes where, what they have equipped, and etc. It gets fairly complex when you get into it. You're playing the game, and it takes a good 1-2 hours to get a handle of the weaponry, range, and recoil of it, and shooting an enemy down takes a while if you're playing against other humans.

Most human vs. human matches require extreme strategy, and knowing what to do, and do it with extreme precision.

Graphics are decent for it's time, but doesn't take advantage of all the power the Xbox 360 has, but it does take up all the functionality of the multiplayer.

Finally, the game isn't as polished as it could've been, but for a new game it's bound to have problems, and maybe if/when Chromehounds 2 releases, all the unpolished features it had, could've been fixed...but Chromehounds is a solid game, with some great multiplayer.

I personally enjoyed every single second of that game, and miss it to be honest. Playing with squad members is a blast, and very fun and rewarding, although it gets stale after 300+ hours of play. But it's a game that some people might not have patience for or appreciate it enough, and that's up to you to decide.

Being firmly convinced that there are two types of gamers in the world, those who enjoy simulations and those who like arcade-style games, I would have to say that Chromehounds is definitely for those who enjoy the former of the two categories. Set in a fictionalized world where HOUNDs are basically customizable 'Mechs, you take on the role of a mercenary fighting for one of the three regions in the Neroimus Region.   The story mode is straightforwardly divided into the six playable Hound c...

Chromehounds is a great mech simulation game that is advanced but still maintains little arcade feeling to not make it boring. First i will talk about the single player. The single player is basically made as practice for the online experience, though the singleplayer contains a decent storyline, chromehounds is a multiplayer game right through it's metal heart. The single player allows you to unlock parts and to try out different bots, commander, sniper, soldier etc so you don't get blown up im...
