When characters make conversation during normal gameplay, rather than a dialog-focused scene.
"You fight like a dairy farmer!" and "I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than you!" are both good examples of this.
A common element in the Shin Megami Tensei series and many of its spin-offs. In order to recruit new demons, the player must enter negotiations during battle and appease them so that they feel inclined to join.
Commonly used in 16-bit era simulation games, negotiation is the act of attempting to reduce or increase the cost of a service.
Optional conversation-based cutscenes that are unrelated to the main narrative. These conversations are often humorous or provide insight into the game's setting.
Sometimes, things are just meant to happen the way they do. Usually triggered by a timer, or by the player crossing a checkpoint.
Games where players can choose to talk their way out fighting, which is often an option in RPGs.
