Cougar

Overview

Introduced by Clan Jade Falcon during the Clan Invasion era, the Cougar light OmniMech was built at a time when Jade Falcon's resources were stretched thin, and as a result its creators were tasked with modifying an existing design rather than creating a new 'Mech from the ground up. This was accomplished by downsizing the engine and armor plating of the Adder, which left the 'Mech slower and more vulnerable than its progenitor, but in return gave it a significantly larger amount of pod space. At nineteen tons, over half of the Cougar's total mass is devoted to weapon emplacements, which translates to a larger-than-average punch for its weight class. In spite of some rather dramatic changes, though, the Cougar more or less conforms to the same role that its predecessor was designed to fill, as both 'Mechs' loadouts are tailored for maximum efficacy while engaging foes at range.

The standard configuration for a Cougar consists of two Large Pulse Lasers, one in each arm, supported by an LRM-10 rack on either side of its torso. A number of viable alternate loadouts exist for the 'Mech, though the most prevalent of them choose to retain the long range proclivity of its original design. The A Configuration, for instance, upgrades the standard loadout to LRM-20s complete with an Artemis IV Fire Control System, while the B Configuration boasts two ER Particle Projection Cannons coupled with extra heat sinks for proper dissipation. Variants more suited for urban environments or short range combat include the C Configuration, which packs five ER Medium Lasers in addition to a Gauss Rifle, as well as the D Configuration, which mounts two SRM-4s along with an ER Large Laser and Ultra Autocannon/10.
