    Crowd Control

    Concept »

Crowd control is the art of whittling down large groups of attacking enemies via the constant reassessment of the greatest threat to the player; achieved by constant player movement, and adjusting the aim to the closest threat, then quickly moving on to the next greatest threat, and so forth.

    Short summary describing this concept.

    Overview

With the concept of Crowd Control, a game derives its challenge from throwing an overwhelming number of enemies at the player that, alone, would not serve as much of an obstacle at all.  They could be mindless zombies like in Dead Rising or Resident Evil 4, or simply sword fodder like in Dynasty Warriors games or hack-n-slash dungeon crawlers.

Old-school styled shooters like Serious Sam, Earth Defense Force, & Painkiller take the concept to a different level, often throwing hundreds of agressive enemies at the player at a time, all of which take a mere one or two shots to kill.  This leads to the first person equivalent of a bullet hell shooter, with the player perpetually weaving about projectiles while gunning down an ever-growing horde.
