Danica became the first woman to lead laps in the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 where she was named rookie of the year both for the race and season as a whole. In 2009 she attained the highest finish for a female in the Indy 500 by finishing 3rd. Her biggest achievement, however, was winning the Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi. She is the first, and still only, woman to win in IndyCar.

In 2010 and 2011 she raced part time in the Nationwide series (the minor league to the major league Cup series) while still racing full time in IndyCar. With the start of the 2012 season Danica has left IndyCar to compete full time in NASCAR. She is running the full season in Nationwide for JR Motorsports (team owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr) and part time in the Cup series for Stewart-Haas Racing (owned by Tony Stewart).

She has stated she'd like to go full time in the Cup series in 2013 as well as attempt running both the 2013 Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in the same day; a feat Stewart accomplished twice, finishing in the top 10 of both races both times.
