Just started a new game and found that you can jump if you quickly release and press circle while sprinting. With some clever application, you can actually bypass some areas early on.
Dark Souls
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Sep 22, 2011
A quasi-sequel to From Software's action-RPG Demon's Souls, set in a new universe while retaining most of the basic gameplay and the high level of challenge. It features a less-linear world, a new checkpoint system in the form of bonfires, and the unique Humanity system.
You can jump!

I'm gonna blow your mind: you can also slide down ladders by pressing Circle.
WHAT!

There's actually some key points in the game where jumping is required.
For instance, you can't unlock the advanced magic trainer unless you jump a big ass gap.

Are you guys joking or did you seriously not know about these features?
I found out about jumping by hitting the run button twice on accident.
I had remembered seeing a guy jumping in one of the early trailers so I experimented with the controls a bunch early on until I found it. It wouldn't be an understatement to say that it is one of my favorite new features, it really opens up a new layer of possibilites when it comes to one of my favorite aspects of the game, the exploration.
Anyway, I always thought that it was bullshit that you couldn't jump in Demon's Souls, especially at that one part in 2-1.

First time I attempted that broken plank jump in Undead Burg, all didn't end too well.
Yeah, that's why I'm hesitant to attempt jumps, even in places where it seems obvious. The issue is that I have trouble running in a straight line toward the launch point for my jump, so there's a very real possibility of jumping to the left or right of where I want to land.
However, jumping is still pretty useful for avoiding enemy attacks.
I actually dislike it because I'm so used to sprinting and rolling and the jump has a cool down.
Also as people mentioned there are some places where you can't jump no matter what which makes the whole inclusion of this leap more frustrating. That shortcut in undead Burg to the Lower Burg - you can go inside a house and theres that tiny knee high ledge seperating you from the stairs behind the gate - I tried sprinting and jumping and you clearly jump over it but theres an invisible wall.
Kinda wish they maybe mapped it to Triangle/Y while sprinting

You dark souls guys are just crazy. Sorry, but I had to lol when reading about how euphoric you get because a videogame character is able to pull of this amazing new "jump" move. Jumping will revolutionize gaming. :D

People would react the same if you could jump manually in a new 3D Zelda game, I think.

Yeah, it kinda reads a bit pretentious but it really is a good improvement over Demon's Souls. There was one particular spot in that game where I cursed the lack of a jump so much and I'm just glad to have the option this time around. That said, there are a couple of spots where there are low walls that I should totally be able to jump but can't and that's disappointing.
