I'm loving this game so far; I've only just arrived at Anvil's Ford (just after the second set of challenge rooms).  I have to say that the challenge rooms are my least favorite part of the game.  They're not terribly difficult, I haven't failed any of them (playing on normal difficulty first time through) but I'm just curious how many sets of them there are in the whole game.

I've been refreshing this thread since it was posted because I'm playing Darksiders as well and would be interested in this information also.

Yeah man, I love the game, but those challenge rooms just break up the pacing of the game.
