Consensus seems to be its a (technically) flawed but good (not amazing or anything) and fun game. the range in scores seems to be which part of that equation the reviewer weights in more.

I really did not enjoy Alpha Protocol, so I hope this is better.

not a day one purchase for me. but will look at picking it up for a round £15 - £20. plenty else to play atm

I loved Alpha Protocol, so I can look past a flawed game. However, nothing about Dead Island looks interesting to me, so I'll give it a miss unless it goes really cheap.

@Rhaknar: So, this year's game-that-I'm-kind-of-interested-in-but-the-reception-is-lukewarm-so-I'll-postpone-getting-it-until-a-year-later-during-a-huge-Steam-sale-at-75%-off game?

This is about what I expected. The gameplay trailer they released a while back looked really icky in a lot of spots and the combat looked pretty awkward. If there's a Steam sale and I have a few friends who will also pick it up, or if I find it really cheap at a-gasp!-retail store, I'll get it.

There's some good scores in there! I really liked Alpha Protocol, so I'm sure I'll be able to look past the problems in this.

Focus on items in shops not changing after selling or buying.
More HP for NPCs in escort missions.
Butcher enemies won't spawn at all during escort missions (hooray!)
Fixed tracking after loading checkpoint.
Increased minimum vertical distance to count a waypoint as passed for NPCs (they no longer wander back-and-forth).

Be like this years Alpha Protocol? Yikes thats pretty harsh isn't it? That games combat was fundamentaly broken unless you had a guide, but the rest of the game had some cool ideas. I get you were just using it as an example though and you were by no means comparing the two.

I'll probably buy it when it's on sale or somesuch. I'm more excited for RAGE, in terms of an open world shootermabob, right now.

I'm pretty sure AP got way worse reviews than this game.

@UnrealDP: I didn't use a guide, and I was one shotting people by the end of the game. What about the combat was so broken? I mean, it wasn't great because of dice rolls and stuff ... but there was nothing about it that needed a guide. Wanna shoot better? More points into guns please! Wanna knife dudes? Stealth it up!

Boss fights kinda sucked though.

I thought the game was going to be garbage from everything I seen, so the reviews I have read acutally sound really, really good. It's certainly not something I would pay 60 dollars for, but I'll be very interested once the price drops down around 30 or so.

Yup. They just email you the code and you can start preloading immediately. Comes with the free Arena DLC too, but not the Ripper weapon. Still, a crazy great deal.

it is Steamworks indeed Lake. Its also $37.50 on steam if you find 3 peeps to buy it with and get the 4pack. In fact, i would be down for that (i still havent bought mine) if anyone wants to try and get a 4-pack going
 
Also, that Destructoid video is quite good in explaining what the game actually is and isnt, its a bit long but if you want to know more about it I recomend watching it

Killing zombies, sandbox map, countless weapons. I'm down to play right away.

Honestly this is just my opinion but why do people care about reviews so much? Who cares what other people think, it's what you think of the game. If you don't want to buy and are a little on the fence, then just rent the bloody thing. I will not and never will base my decisions on what reviews say and always love to try out a new game every once in a while. I can only stick to one game for so long...

This is very, VERY pleasing. A 6 being the lowest, and its the only one that low? Sounds like this isn't a flop like The Cartel was. Good enough for me

So at the end of the game you were one shoting people. What about all the parts before that? Did you ever like the shooting? That game had some really great ideas when it game to dialogue and choice, but at any point it becomes a video game with stealth or shooting it never felt good. I'm not saying that combat is what makes a game, but when shooting feels so bad that most people (apparently not you) have to use a guide because thaty didn't feel like going stealth or they didn't luck out by picking the wrong weapon really sucks.
