when you load up Dead Space 2 there is the option on the main menu to watch a short video called "Previously on Dead Space" or something like that which basically goes through the story of Dead Space 1 - that should be sufficient. But if you have the time and money (and the patience) then the original is a great game so it would definitely be worth checking out.
