A tiny shuffle in the right direction.
EA have apparently turned themselves around with Dead Space that has been called by some the 'Scariest game ever' is it? No.
Dead Space never really scared me and in fact it barely made me feel tense, this was due to the fact that the tactics they used to scare were repeated over and over again throughout the game the main one being walking past something that looks dead only for it to jump up and attack you, whilst this perhaps made me a little jumpy at the start, eventually it became a sort of routine that became rather predictable.
The way they have implemented the standard HUD is rather well done with everything taking place in real time, the main thing is probably the Inventory which takes the form of a holograph. This enables you to become that bit more immersed. The game feels incredibly polished from the graphics, to the characters movements. The health is shown on your character and the ammo shown on your gun so you very rarely see a menu apart from using the store and the bench.
The main character Isaac Clarke is mute throughout the game so it is very hard to actually like him, instead he just feels like a robot as he shows little to almost no emotion throughout the game. Other NPCs don't really react to Isaac except for the scripted speeches they give you when you appear.
The story is fine its nothing exceptional and at times rather generic, but does a good job of keeping things moving along.
Dead Space is a rather short game as well, i completed it, on the normal difficulty, at around 8 hours. During this time I unlocked 32 of the 48 achievements. I also had no real motivation to complete the game again as I believe i had seen all what the game had to offer.
So overall Dead Space is worth a rental, it provides a decent and entertaining diversion but if you've ever had any sort of passing interest in any Horror films or games Dead Space probably wont cause you to lose much sleep.
