Who is the Deadliest?
Most people might have cast this game off right off the bat for being based on a T.V show, thinking it maybe be a cheap cash in. But is there more to this T.V show based game than you think?
In the show, two different warriors from different time periods fought to see who would win and end arguments like "pirate or ninja?" By calculating each warriors' weapon statistics, accuracy, damage, and so on. After all statistics are accumulated, they would be put into a program to see which warrior would dominate the other.
In the game, you play as those warriors. In all, so far, the warriors are: Ninja, Pirate, Apache, Samurai, Knight, Viking, Spartan, and (as a poll winner from season 2) the Roman Centurion. Each in their own class such as Berserker, Champion, and Guerilla. More warriors will be available later on as DLC, in which you can vote for which you'd like on their site.
Each warrior has customizable armor and weapons, so you can choose which weapons to go to battle with, or what color your armor is. To unlock new weapons, the player must progress through the arcade mode with the warrior they choose. The arcade is the main mode, and is pretty simple, you fight all the warriors in succession, and as you progress, you can play a mini game, such as cutting pig carcasses in a designated time, or play in a survival mode in which every blow you take could sever a limb. Winning these unlocks new weapons and armor. The characters are nice, but more would be better, as there is only a few at the moment.
So, the fighting system. It has been compared to the PS1 cult classic Bushido Blade, as it features limb damage, and the ability to completely sever limbs off. Each warrior has a projectile weapon also, and 2 different primary weapons such as a spear or sword of some kind. All the fighters' weapons feel different from each other, varying when it comes to speed and damage, making which weapons you have your warrior use actually matter. The basics for the attacks are low, mid, or high. The game can feel a bit mashy at times, even though there is a, albeit not very fleshed out, combo system. But at the same time, there is some depth here, so you can take some time to make a strategy and beat those mashers. Also, there is a finishing move system where if you pull a move off before they die, it triggers a special finishing move specific to that warrior.
The game takes a realistic approach to the combat, having the warriors get covered in blood, and the fights are generally fast paced. One well placed spear throw from a Spartan could go through an opponent's head and end the fight, or if you lose an arm, you can bleed to death. As for the graphics, they are nothing remarkable, but not terrible at the same time. It's a downloadable game, and you can tell. So, as Jeff and Brad said about Blacklight: Tango Down, "It looks good... for the price."
The focus on the game was put into the online, which feature ranked, unranked, and tournament modes. If you win ranked matches, points are added to your rank. Also, there is split screen for those who want to play with a buddy.
So, at only 800 Microsoft points ($10) should you see if you're the deadliest warrior? This is not anything we haven't seen before, but it is a decent fighting game with enough going on here to keep you satisfied for a while, fighting online matches and getting DLC characters down the line, now we can finally find out who the deadliest warrior is.
