When they are in the cafeteria. The music sounds like Super Mario mixed up a bit. Anyone else notice this?

Nope. Totally disagree. Deadly Premonition's soundtrack is a masterpiece.

I have had that Super Mario World song seared into my brain for nearly 20 years. They aren't even close.

The first thing I thought when that scene started was, "Why did they get the rights to the Super Mario World song?"  If you don't hear it, you're crazy.

I can't stop listening to this now. Please tell me this is used more throughout the rest of the game.

I'm not really hearing the Mario comparison though.

People, listen exclusively to the dude whistling in the theme and then listen to the tempo of the Mario theme starting at 0:06.  You can't possibly say that there's no similarity at all.

@Milkman: There are a handful of different songs on the soundtrack for this game, and they are each used dozens and dozens of times throughout the course of the game, which adds more to the absurdity and hilarity of the whole thing, especially considering that any of them hardly ever fit the current situation the characters are in. So yes, you will hear this song a LOT.

it sounds more like a cheerier version of the ghost house music from Super Mario World... skip to 0:27 for best results:

If you play those two at the same time its awesome. I could start an entire genre of music just by mixing those two themes. Im calling it..... Javrock.

Reminds of the "Ghostbusters" vs. "I Want a New Drug" debate.  I noticed the same thing myself, and maybe it was an unconscious thing on the part of their whistle man.  It does change significantly after the first refrain, but the similarities are pretty pronounced there.

Yes it was...and that was totally intentional. There's stuff like that everywhere in the game, and it's amazing, because they pull it off so well that it almost doesn't seem deliberate. It's this deliberate, but brilliantly disguised cornyness that causes so many people (including myself) to fall in love with it.

Definitely an homage to Super Mario World. There's a chance that its unintentional though, as in..the musician played Super Mario World and made a very similar tune without even thinking about it. Want to know for sure? Ask the guy who made the song.

Yep. Made the same comparison in the comments section of one of the previous episodes. Glad I'm not alone.

I loved that when Vinny was doing the driving minigame in ep. 3 it was such a blatant knockoff of American Idiot. The quality of Toyota Commercial/Pro Wrestling instrumental theme music avoid-licensing-by-changing-one-note in Deadly Premonition is about the only thing in the product anyone on the dev team seems to have spent more than fifteen minutes on.
