We still have to remember that this is GOTY material
Duders, I'm very angry that Giant Bomb covered this game, so I'm going to make the same posts on every DP thread ever.
So I only have to mention five games that have better characters and five games that have better stories?" @Spoonman671:@Blair: What's laughable is your shitty post, here's a sticker for participation. Mention better characters or stories, otherwise you're a troll who should GTFO. Although based on your three-word posting I'm afraid to hear what you would consider good writing. "
Stories:
Fallout: NV
Heavy Rain
Alan Wake
Alpha Protocol
Red Dead Redemption
(Also Ran - Sam & Max: The Devils Playhouse)
Characters:
Enslaved
Civ V
Nier
Fable III
Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker
(Maybe Final Fantasy XIII, but I tried to to be controversial.)
I know, it's all in my opinion, and I'm not saying Deadly Premonition is a terrible game... but no, it's story isn't THAT great.
Edit: But I would totally nominate it for best Dialog.
But yes, explaining one's position or offering (counter-)examples is always the best possible way to conduct discussion.
Heavy Rain and Alan Wake tell their stories quite badly for reasons I've gone into elsewhere, but in short the narration and lazy Stephen King pastiche (I'm Alan Wake, I'm a writer) are more embarassing and clumsy than convincing in Alan Wake and detract from the excellent visuals and setting. Heavy Rain's shaky plotting and terrible ending undo much of the good will I have for the game, I wouldn't defend its story.
I cannot comment on New Vegas or Alpha Protocol. Red Dead would be my pick, but I'd put DP over Heavy Rain and Alan Wake as a candidate easily, for the simple reason that they both fail at what they're trying to do, whereas DP succeeds wildly in being weird, funny, and unique.
As for the characters list, I highly doubt there's anything there that can complete with Francis York Morgan and Jeff Kramer's delivery. But to each their own.
" @owl_of_minerva: I read the OP, thanks for coming out though. It's laughable that this is a serious topic. "People clearly agree that it could be a contender in certain categories though. There are parts of the game that people legitimately like and they think it has a chance in certain categories. But thanks for letting us all know how stupid they are for not sharing your own personal opinion. If you don't give a shit what other people think, don't read or reply to their posts.
Alan Wake's story, to me, is written, acted, and presented in a fantastic way. I can't say enough for how much I enjoyed Alan Wake. Perhaps it's a matter of personal taste.
My problem with DP's story is that it's wrapped around such atrocious gameplay that most people wouldn't stick around long enough to get a quarter of a way into it. Maybe the actual game left such a bad taste in my mouth that I apply that same pain to the narrative... maybe the narrative shines as more than mediocre because the wrapping around it is of such low quality. But taken as a whole, as a game that tells a story through dialog and cut scenes and gameplay, it isn't even close to Alan Wake or RDR.
As for the characters, Francis York Morgan my be interesting and quirky, but there isn't very much beyond his odd mannerisms and freakish grin. The voice actor needs to get a congressional medal of honor though.
I was going to buy deadly premonition as it enjoyed the endurance run, but then i realised although i started to enjoy the game towards the end of it, the reason i enjoyed it was mostly the GB team playing it and their reaction to ridiculous stuff
so i realised its not my type of game, enjoyed the story and will probably pick it up at some point but to me it seems like it only works as an endurance run
I hate people who keep saying that Deadly Premonition is 100% garbage.
I would be perfectly fine with it winning an award for it's storyline or characters.
I must have watched the wrong endurance run because the one I watched doesn't make me feel like the game is all that great. The only interesting character, York, doesn't make up for the game playing like shit.
It's the guilty pleasure of the year for sure, but pur it up next to the likes of Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Heavy Rain, Fallout: New Vegas and others and it really doesn't stand a chance.
" I hate people who keep saying that Deadly Premonition is 100% garbage. I would be perfectly fine with it winning an award for it's storyline or characters. "The storyline and characters are certainly interesting but up to snuff with games like Mass Effect 2? Fuck no.
As much as I would like to stick it up all the snobs asses that still refuse to give this bona-fide good game any credit, I can't give it GOTY. There are too many legitimate issues (intended or not) that keep it out of any serious GOTY discussion.
Best narrative and game of the year are two different things but I do think Deadly Premonition at least deserves consideration for best narrative. It wouldn't be my actual pick for the best narrative and it's certainly not a contender for the game of the year itself but the quality of its story mustn't be overlooked.
" From Jeff's formspring:He has previously mentioned that he likes the story though. The problem with the question is that it only mentions GOTY and not the other categories, so it seems to me that he's thinking about the Game of the Year award specifically. And we all knew that wasn't going to happen.
"
And the person asking the question seems to have had another question in there, but never actually asked it properly. So Jeff ended up ignoring the question about "how you guys build your lists at the end of the year".
And if you have been following my posts, this one completes a lop of reasoning that began at about 8:00 last night.
As I've said elsewhere, my preference would be to that Red Dead wins, but Alan Wake and Heavy Rain are both failures due to terrible plotting and/or narration: also, their attempt to mimic the style of films or Stephen King is unbearably pretentious, and shows up how much worse their writing is. Mass Effect 2 is a character study, it barely has a story worth considering. DP has a better narrative than all but one or two games this year. People automatically assume that games with better mechanics or higher budget necessarily have a better story, but that is not the case.
@everyone else who seems to think this is a joke: MIT is dead serious. Check out the 'articles and analysis' section for numerous articles on why Deadly Premonition's storytelling is excellent here.
" pretending deadly premonition was good stopped being funny this summer, guess you didn't know "This x10000000
C'mon guys, it's a game destined for cult status. I wouldn't expect stuff like Rocky Horror Picture Show or Donnie Darko to win any Oscars even if they're a million times more entertaining than friggin' Cold Mountain. As for some of the games being compared to DP in terms of "better stories"... Enslaved? RDR? Starcraft II??? Maybe we should talk about which has a more appealing color, apples or oranges. DP offers players like me a lot of things those mainstream games could never accomplish, so I don't get why the majority opinion is somehow seen as "objective reality". I thought gamers were all anti-elitism and everything, so this discussion is baffling to me.
It's like listening those people who want every single movie to be directed by Christopher Nolan. Good grief.
Let me repeat myself:
Whodafuck Cares?!
There will always be more than one Game of the Year each year, so to have a game elevated to that status is moot unless you plan on releasing a GotY edition anyway.Freaking Sneak King has been awarded Game of the Year, for chrissakes!
