An open-world action-adventure game following an eccentric FBI agent as he investigates a series of bizarre murders in the small rural town of Greenvale.
It's a big spoiler if I tell you. Let's just say Zach is one of the best story twists to come to games since we found out in Final Fantasy VII that Cloud is not really a member of SOLDIER but that he developed a mixed persona of his original self and a SOLDIER member called Zack. I wonder if the name Zach in DP was inspired from Zack in FFVII.
My guess at this point is Zach is who he was born as, the "real" persona, if you will, while York is simply made up. Zach is the crazy one hidden away from the world, so it seems logical he was the one who witnessed his parents' deaths, not York. I think York is, in a sense, the collected pieces of Zach's shattered mind. York is almost entirely cerebral in nature, calculating and somewhat callous, rarely employing emotions. Meanwhile, it's hinted that Zach is the one who better understands feelings and emotions (Zach is "better with the ladies," York doesn't understand women). This makes me think that Zach is the heart, or rather, Zach's heart is the part that remains "Zach."
Simply put, I think York is Zach's systematically reconstructed mind that shields and coddles Zach's broken heart at the same time that it allows Zach to function in the world as a person, even if that person is not him.

I haven't played DP. I don't play console games at all. I'm a PC gamer exclusively.
I haven't looked anything up. I don't like spoiling myself on things. I accidentally spoiled myself on Adachi during the Persona 4 ER and that really bummed me out. If I had any actual spoilers, I would have posted in that "I Youtubed the ending" thread that's been beckoning to me by now.
Everything I wrote was my theory based on what we've seen in VJ and BR up to this point. York meeting his child self in his dreams was a dead giveaway that young York = Zach after he talked with Emily and had that dream flashback. From there, I looked at York's behavior and how he interacted with Zach, and put the pieces together.
I don't understand why you assume I had to have looked something up that was not at all subtly hinted at in the course of the game.
He is the morning cup of coffee and slice of pie. He is a good episode of the x-files. He is Batman and the joker. He is Tom and also Jerry. He is all around us at night but can be seen during the day.
