Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
GAME » on June 26, 2025
The sequel to Death Stranding. The mission to reconnect the world takes Sam Porter Bridges to Mexico and Australia where new environmental challenges and foes await.

A few years have passed since Sam Porter Bridges helped reconnect the United Cities of America (UCA) and stopped Higgs from bringing about a new mass extinction. Now Sam hides out in a cave with Lou, the supposedly "defective" BB, Lou, who has grown up to become a toddler outside of her pod. However, Fragile is able to track down Sam and requests his help for her new organization, Drawbridge, to extend the chiral network into Mexico. So Sam begins another journey to deliver cargo throughout Mexico and connect them to the Chiral network. However, he leaves Lou behind with Fragile, and the two of them are attacked by mysterious assailants. Fragile is heavily wounded, and Lou is missing, presumed dead. Strangely, a baby BT that appears to be a copy of Sam's former BB takes residence in the pod that Sam previously wore. A couple months later, Sam is called out by Fragile and her allies behind Drawbridge to expand the chiral network into Australia, using a transport ship known as the Magellan to travel through the tar currents and go through the newly-opened gate connecting Mexico and Australia. While trying to expand the network further and honor Lou's memory, Sam tries to rediscover his purpose, even as new and returning enemies threaten to bring the world back towards extinction again.

Gameplay

Similar to the previous game, the player controls Sam as he takes on missions to transport materials, people, and sometimes the character himself, from one place to another on the map, this time spanning large parts of Mexico and Australia. As Sam makes deliveries to new spots throughout the game, he will use his Q-Pid to connect them to the Chiral Network, gaining several benefits:

  • Building structures using PCC (provided there's enough bandwidth).
  • Contributing materials to bases and structures.
  • Sending and receiving equipment from other players in the server instance.

Of course, not everyone will trust Sam with adding them to the Chiral Network, so the player may have to take on additional side missions for those holdouts to build up trust until they give Sam permission to let them join.

Differences from the first game

  • Sam can construct and partially customize both motor trikes and pickup trucks to transport himself and other materials. Customizations include extra battery power, chiral devices that allow for greater lift over rocky terrain, spiky tires for gripping steep slopes, and defensive devices that temporarily absorb electric attacks or bullets.
  • Sam has a wider variety of weapons at his disposal, including the electric spear that bandits have.
  • Blood-covered weapons no longer require donations of Sam's blood, but use a separate synthesized blood that draws from existing resources.
  • Sam has access to a transport ship called The Magellan that can instantly carry him to various bases once they've been connected to the Chiral Network. He can also use the Magellan to complete deliveries outside of the main story, but doing so will come with heavily reduced rewards.

Enemies

Generally broken down into 3 types of enemies: Humans, BTs, and Mechs.

Humans

The MULEs and similar rebels from the last game are present in Mexico and Australia too. Both the type that want to knock Sam out to steal his cargo, and the ones who don't care about killing Sam with lethal weapons even if doing so might trigger a voidout. Due to the machniations of Higgs, human enemies have some stronger weaponry, from electric spears to assault rifles and even machinegun emplacements. Sam can choose to stealth around them (made easier as these enemies don't have a scanner system that instantly detects Sam), drive through their territory, or bring his own weaponry to defeat them, with the caution that bringing lethal weaponry may risk triggering a voidout.

BTs

The opening of the Plate Gate has also led to bigger and badder Beached Things (BTs) appearing across the world. Gazers and Watchers can see Sam from farther away and try to drag him into the tar, and if they are successful, they can trigger a clash with an even bigger BT, like a giant octopus, a hunting dog, or even a flying manta. However, Sam also has bigger weaponry to fight back with, from Blood Grenades and Assault Rifles with multipurpose bullets, to multiple rocket launchers or a Chiral Cannon.

Mechs

Robotic warriors dropped into the area by Higgs pose a bigger threat to Sam, requiring slightly different weapons to fight them. Though most standard weapons have some level of effectiveness, electric weaponry and Ghost Blades, on top of other lethal weaponry, prove effective in ending the mech threat even quicker.
