Games with stories that involve aliens invading another planet.
In games, the player is usually the ambushee, not the ambusher, but certain multiplayer and open-world games give players a chance to try this sneaky tactic themselves.
A game in which the object is for each team to retrieve the opponent's flag and return it to their own base. Typically used in multiplayer first-person shooter games.
It's just like Capture the Flag, except... not.
Control Points are typically spots on a map that must be taken and held for one team to beat the other in some first-person shooter multiplayer modes.
The ultimate pressure feature. Players have to complete the task at hand, be it defeating opponents or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time.
A peaceful elevator ride to the next part of the level or to a boss fight that becomes a non-stop barrage of enemies to fight.
Missions during which players are tasked with protecting a non-playable character or object from harm until a certain goal is met.
"Horde" is a type of multiplayer game mode in which players battle co-operatively against increasingly difficult waves of computer-controlled enemies.
Enemies will spawn infinitely until the player has accomplished a certain goal, e.g reached a checkpoint or killed a certain number of enemies.
A moment in a game in which the player is faced with overwhelming odds, designed to be unbeatable by conventional means, but in which the player is encouraged to continue to fight anyway.
Little Sisters are genetic tools utilized to carry and gather ADAM in Rapture.
The assault on a city, or classically a castle, by an opposing force with intentions of conquest or pillaging. This is commonly accompanied by siege weaponry.
The Strategic Point is an alternative to the staple of the Real Time Strategy Genre, Resource Gathering. Instead, armies fight over points on the map that earns the equivalent of resources.
Enemies that are small, deal relatively low damage, and have low health, but make up for it by attacking in large numbers. Examples include Flood infection forms from Halo, Trites from Doom 3, or Crawlers from Resistance: Fall of Man.
A type of gameplay where the player chooses and builds autonomous towers to protect a location from waves of enemies.
