This game doesn't seem to be getting alot of buzz lately. Sure the live action tie-in show looks kinda meh but I think it might actually be decent if given the chance. So I took it upon myself to reserve the game to try out the beta. If it sucks, I can at least take my reserve dollars and throw it on Bioshock.

FYI: Beta starts on:

March 19-25 for PS3

March 22-25th will be the final PC phase(NDA is also suppose to be lifted around that time as well though many have posted youtube vids of gameplay).

and last but not least, Xbox 360 owners get beta access March 25-26th(Kinda short if you ask me).

So did any of you duders hope to get into the beta next week?

Yeah it seems to be going over the radar. I watched both ign and gamespots 1 hour gameplay and it really looks good. It seems like borderlands with an mmo twist. The more I hear about this game the more I like the idea. But it does scare me with the fact this has no hype. I've never played any games from Trion but from the looks of review people seem to like their games.

I played in a closed beta phase about a month ago. Its not very good. Felt super generic and just not at all fun to play.

That could have just been a beta thing and it could improve, but it doesn't really matter to me. I was never looking forward to it nor did I have any real interest in the final product.

I personally seem mixed on it. I was not convinced that Dust 514 would be a interesting F2P game but I was kinda wrong. Hopefully this beta will be worth my time....Or like I said, I can always take the $5 I put on it and throw it on Bioshock's preorder...

Personally, I have no expectations for Defiance, but I have quite a few friends on XBL who are all excited for it. It looks middling at best to me, and I can just imagine all sorts of server issues. I'm gonna let them get started when it launches and join in if it's good and if they are enjoying it. I am very curious though how the show on Sci-fi will interact/affect the game design.

You never know....it is really ambitous and I bet many other game devs are watching how this thing goes over.

I am always hearing the same thing from the people thay have played it. That it feels generic.

Being generic seems to be the game's main criticism. Hopefully, spending the week with the beta can keep me from being worried that this might be a semi-dud. I can always fall back on the TV show when it's out.

I played the beta for about an hour last night (on PS3) and boy was it bad. I know its a beta, but the game comes out next month so I'm guessing this is close to final code. I could not believe how bad it was, I've been waiting for any kind of decent MMO for a console for a long time, but I don't think this game is it.

I thought it was pretty OK. It feels a lot like Borderlands in a lot of regards, although no where near as fun. Generic is definitely a good word to describe it.

For PC gamers, there's much better MMO's you could be playing. For console gamers, Destiny is coming out later in the year and seems to be doing a lot of the same things with much higher production values. If nothing else, that will probably be a little less generic.

I'll be checking it out because I like what they are trying to do with the title. I have a feeling it will be mediocre at best though, but hopefully I'm pleasantly surprised.

I honestly don't even know what this game is its been that under the radar for me. And I'm a dude who keeps his ear close to gaming news.

I played the Beta on PS3 last night and it seems like it has tons of potential. It rough at this point. The open world questing along with matchmaking mp is pretty cool. Feels like BF crossed with Borderlands in 3rd person. If they make it look and run a lot better this could be a good game.

Just played for around an hour and a half. It was not anything impressive but I had fun. I'm not a pc gamer so this formula is slightly new to me. Definitely going to give it another go before the beta ends.

This game has alot of potential to be a good console MMOTPS. Dunno if I would personally pay $60 for it though...

@nictel: Hmm well Dust 514 had did some changes here and there since I was in the closed beta so It's hard for me to say yet.

This game seems really solid, a whole shitload better than Dust for sure. I've had 30 different guns that acted substantially differently in the two beta areas; I will say it doesn't leave a good first impression and the multiplayer is only as fun as the quality of guns you have but after you get past the tutorial area/first quest hub the game gets quite a bit more entertaining and the shooting actually feels pretty good; better than Mass Effect's shooting does for example (though the abilities aren't nearly as well designed).

It's kind of murderous if you're solo; granted it has Bioshock's dying system so there's not really anything to lose so doing, but it appears to not have a cover system and a difficult third person shooter without cover is something sorely lacking in today's market. It has an okay story and MMO jankiness in spades; and I love me some MMO jankiness (jumping up weird looking terrain etc) which was sorely lacking in SWTOR for example.

I might just wait on a couple of reviews before getting it

It's a MMO, so I really doubt you'll be able to rent it.

Picked it up on a whim yesterday. The pre-order bonuses on Steam were pretty great, and I like being around for MMO launches so I figured even if I didn't enjoy the gameplay the buzz would justify my purchase. Furthermore, the show tie in is a neat concept, and given that it's so ambitious I figured I'd want to see it first hand.

The game is fun. It's absolutely a Borderlands clone and the criticisms of it being generic are well founded. That said, I think the combat is a lot of fun, if a little hard, and it's fun to zip around the world on an ATV. It actually feels a lot like what I thought Borderlands would be like back when the game was announced. The standard missions are a little bland, but there are random public quests that show up on your map every few minutes that are pretty cool. You see loads of vehicles all sprinting to the "Arkfall" sites, (the name of the public quests) and players swarm the objectives. It's pretty cool.

It's coming out for xbox and playstation as well and utilizes your gamerID, so you may be able to rent it and play it.

i played the PS3 beta. it's fun! nothing there made it stand out to me. seems like it would be fun to bum around with a group and shoot stuff though.

If I want to shoot things with my friends i Play BF3 or Borderlands2 does this game do anything better than those games?

Does anyone with "Defiance" have a gameplan for the forthcoming PS4 & XBox720? Given they reckon both will be due out for "holiday season" then we're really looking at not much more than just six months away. I'm curious how this MMO will manage to survive after six months for now, such as if the game includes an online playstation/xbox online store which might allow you to re-download to the next-gen console having already paid for the game...or something like that.

I've only seen some gameplay but it seems really medicore.

@stormhead: If it miraculously had a strong community 6 months later they wouldn't really care about the next generation coming out; at some point MMOs become about the people you know in them and nothing to do with the actual game or graphics. Also it's not like there's a mass migration to new consoles immediately; only say 10-20% of PS3/360 owners will be dumb enough to buy a console at launch even knowing that the vast majority of launch titles are terrible.

Also, you know you can play this on pc, right. Its pretty good, I was driving my time traveling dodge charger when I rolled up on three guys shooting at something, so I transformed back into a human and started shooting at the less human looking alien. and 3 seconds later, racest cortana told me I just killed all the mutants. and every one got on to their respecive cars and driveaway.

Its fun, but....I honestly don't think its going to do particuarly well. They should have just dropped the entire MMO moniker, IMO.

Oddly enough, raciest Cortania is more likable then regular Cortania.

@anund: It's okay, commercialism is hard to resist even if you loathe Capitalism; it's just spoonfed to you from every orifice. But unless you have money to burn wouldn't it be wiser to wait it out and look back at some older games you've yet to play? There's always another great game, another diamond in the rough just waiting for you to find them.

@StrikeALight I haven't followed the development closely, and they certainly haven't done much to avoid the MMO identy, but I think Trion generally refers to the game as a "persistant online shooter." It's semantics, but I think that description for the game is better than "MMO."
