I have an older PS3 with a 40GB HDD and a broken Blu-ray drive. Would I be able to download and install the digital edition, or am I going to run out space in the process? I realize that the PS4 version requires 40GB of space, but surely the PS3 version is small due to the lower resolution textures - no?

    You're feedback is appreciated.

As with every game available on PSN, the file size is listed right there on the store page. It's 24.7GB

@blakdeth: according to Sony's website it's 24.7 gigs, but since you need double the space for the download then install no you won't have the space for it.

@blakdeth: when I downloaded it was a 7 GB file, and checking it on my PS3 now it's occupying about 7.5 GB, so I have no idea where this 24 GB thing came from, maybe people are looking at the PS4 version reqs? but yeah if you have at least 10 GB free you should be fine.

edit: or rather at least 20 gigs ? I don't know how the installation on the ps3 works, you'll have a 7 gig file and the need to install so yeah at least 20 gigs , I guess thats why they say you need 24 gigs? anyway perfectly doable with a 40 gig drive, you'll just have to free up some space probably.

Thanks for the feedback. It's good to have real world experiences as well as the information on Sony's website. I appreciate it.

@blakdeth: Just to give a heads up even though it might say 24 gb to download it will also need an additional 24 gb to install on the harddrive as well. I ran into space trouble when I grabbed FF X | X-2 collection earlier this month, the size of the game was about 24 gb but it would not download until I free up an additional 24 gb as well. In total I needed to free about 48 gb to get it installed, I then suppose the 24 gb file I downloaded gets erased over and just shows the 24 gb install.

Rule in short: Whatever it says the install size is on psn, just make sure you have double that size on your harddrive free up.

@i_stay_puft: Thanks for the feedback. This seems to contradict what @onarum was saying in post #5, which makes me a bit leery about trying the digital download on a 40GB PS3.

Let me tell you of the impetus for this question. My wife and I have been gaming on the Xbox 360. She has hers and I have mine. This generation, I opted for the PS4 over the Xbox One. I would very much like to play Destiny with my wife, but I would also like to play it on a current-gen console (i.e., PS4). I was hoping I could purchase Destiny on the PS3 and take advantage of the free upgrade to the PS4 version. I just so happen to have an old 40GB PS3 and a newer, slim PS3. If I could purchase two copies of Destiny, one for each PS3, I could upgrade one to the PS4 and have the best of both worlds. I am aware that Destiny is not a cross-platform game and that I cannot play with a PS3 user from a PS4.

So, what do you think? Should I just buy my wife a PS4 and be done with it?

@blakdeth: dude... here have some pictures

    No Caption Provided

and here's the only other piece of destiny content taking up space on the HDD

    No Caption Provided

So I really have absolutely no idea why it says 24 GB on the psn store page, the file I downloaded from psn was a little bit less in size then the size you see after installed on the picture there, so logically speaking if you had 20 gigs free you are set, first you'll download a file around 7.3 gigs, then you'll install it, which means you'll need at least around 15 gigs (20 is to be safe), after which you'll delete the downloaded installation file and that's it.

Personally I'm liking Destiny but I don't think it's the game that should make you buy a new console for, I actually had decided to wait for a probable PC version, but after watching the PS3 version Ql I decided to go for it, since it looked alright , and I do not regret it.

I believe it says the size as 24.xGB because you get the PS3 and PS4 version. The PS4 version I think is like 17.xGB. So 7.x + 17.x = 24.x

For all its flaws I still really enjoy playing the game. Even though I feel like I may be burnt out on it. I still want to play it. So I just bought the digital version myself on PS3. To get both digital versions. And I am trading in my PS4 disc copy. And since I have each system in two separate rooms, I can play the game no matter which I am hanging out in at the time now.

Sorry I should of probably stated I don't own a digital copy of Destiny but have bought most to all my games on ps3 through there digital store so I have had to deal with the hassle of ps3 storage space. It's kinda stupid they never mention the installation size for the game. Would save alot of headaches.

why don't you get a bigger harddrive? it's really easy install. It's also pretty easy to replace the lens on your blu drive

@liquiddragon: Yeah, good option as well. I remember getting a 1 tb for like 40-50 bucks a few years back.

That's a great question. I'm trying to spend as little as possible to acquire two last-gen versions and one current-gen version of Destiny. In addition, I already have a fully functioning PS3 slim (as well as the older, 40GB model) so I would rather not invest in upgrading the hardware. For roughly the same amount I could purchase two copies for the Xbox 360 (to play co-op with my wife), and one copy for my PS4 to play on my own or with friends that own a PS4 (but I don't have any of those *grin*). The only downside I can see to this is I won't be able to transfer my character from Xbox 360 to PS4.

Again, that's a perfectly valid question, I just don't think it is worth the investment.

No, but you can use the same character from PS3 on PS4. The characters are saved server side and are tied to your PSN account.

That is certainly a compelling feature. Thanks for the advice.

Destiny on the PS3 is dead. At least compared to PS4. I've ran into 8 players in two hours. I'm in the tower now. Haven't seen anyone in the tower for 20 minutes.

As a follow-up to my original question, I can now confirm that Destiny will, download and install on a recently formatted 40GB PS3.

don't know about that, always see a lot of people around, but of course that might be due to our geographic location, I'm in Brasil and apparently a lot of brazilians are playing it on PS3 because hey, the PS4 is fucking expensive here.

Its also a time of day thing here. At night its dead on PS3. But during the day there are tons of players. Its odd. On PS4 its the opposite.
