Square Enix finally revealed the long rumored Wii U port of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in the lead up to PAX East 2013 where it was shown off to the public for the first time. The port was co-developed by Straight Right (Wii U), Snowed In Studios (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), and Eidos Montreal. At E3 2013, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of the Director's Cut were announced.

Game designer Emile Pedneault told Penny Arcade in an interview that they had no plans to bring any of the Director's Cut improvements and additions to the original release of the game on PS3/PC/Xbox 360. According to Pedneault, their “goal right off the bat was not to make a port," and that the team instead "really wanted to take this opportunity working on the game again to just change what was ehh, so-so with the game and bring some new features to the game.”

A port for Mac was released in April 2014 by Feral Interactive who also handled the Mac version of the original game.

    Director's Cut Differences

    Wii U Features

This version of the game has been significantly enhanced with system-specific features such as dedicated Miiverse Integration and a Neural Hub on the GamePad that allows for touchscreen-hacking, interactive map editing, augmented sniping and other GamePad interactions.

    GamePad Features

The latter allows Jensen to equip a detector that causes the Wii U GamePad to vibrate if an enemy throws a grenade at him and with a swipe of the touch screen, the player can make Adam lob it back at the enemy. Gyroscope-based motion controls come into play in a new augmentation called the Tactical Pattern-Recognition System which puts Jensen's view on the GamePad screen, letting the player see all the info by moving the controller around. It functions as an enhancement of Jensen's Smart Vision from the original game. Previously, players were able to use Smart Vision to look through walls and see shapes of enemies outlined in the game's signature gold-ish color. In the Director's Cut, Smart Vision will let players move the GamePad around like the scanner in ZombiU to look around the environment more freely while also providing far more detailed information about enemies. Now Smart Vision will also display enemy stats such as armor, health or what loot they're carrying.

Off-TV Play is also supported which then utilizes an interface more reminiscent of the original versions on the GamePad screen while retaining its touch-interactivity. Players can even call up an digital in-game version of the official game guide from Future Press on the GamePad through the Neural Hub at any time. The guide will dynamically detect the progress of the player and offer the relevant information for the player to peruse.

    Online Features

Miiverse integration, aside from the standard screenshot and message board functions entails the ability to share either typed, hand drawn and/or audio notes (recorded via the GamePad microphone), so called Infologs that players can leave on the map, with their friends. It is essentially an enhanced version of bloodstains, first found in Demon's Souls. These Infologs can be shared via Miiverse and downloaded by friends who will then be able to look at, for example, a screenshot with a hand-written note and an audio clip inside it.

    Gameplay Enhancements & New Content

On top of making use of the full breadth of Wii U's features, the game will also offer hours of developer commentaries, a New Game+ mode, achievements, a fully interactive in-game guide along with gameplay tweaks like improved A.I., overhauled boss fights, refined game balance and combat and visual improvements.

    All DLC is Included

All previously available content has been brought together in one seamless package.

The "Missing Link," which was available as DLC for the original and Tong's rescue mission that shipped with the Augmented Edition have been seamlessly integrated into the narrative flow of the game. The Missing Link still has players lose their abilities at the beginning but they will be able to bring all the new augmentations and weapons into the regular game after the content is completed and their missing skill points will be awarded back to them.

    New Game+ Mode & Achievements

The highly requested New Game+ mode has added to the Director's Cut, letting players carry over their augmentations from their first playthrough. All the achievements from the original game, including the Missing Link DLC achievements and new Director's Cut achievements are built into the game as well.

    Boss Battles & A.I. Improvements

In terms of the revamped boss battles, all the maps have been reworked to include options for stealth and hacking, allowing players to solve the encounters without firing a single bullet (although the bosses still have to be killed in some way). Eidos Montreal had originally made tweaks to the A.I. for the Missing Link DLC that has now been applied to the entire game.

Another gameplay tweak is that now two energy cells recharge in all but the highest difficulties, allowing for more experimentation and use of augmentations.

    Visual Augmentation

Cleaner visuals and better lighting from the DLC are now applied to the whole game.

The improvements in the visual department consist of smoother shadows, better lighting and anti-aliasing which are now part of the whole game. According to Eidos Montreal's Emile Pedneault, the Director's Cut on Wii U is even "sharper than the PC version," likely referring not to the actual sharpness of the resolution but to the graphical improvements originally found in the "Missing Link" DLC which were applied to the whole game while also being improved even further.

    Exclusive Bonus Content

Also included in the Director's Cut are a 45-minute Making Of-documentary and around eight hours of developer commentary from Eidos Montreal in the vein of Valve games like Half Life 2 or Portal that have small icons appearing in the world that trigger the audio files which can then be played back even while the player continues to explore the level.

Additionally, five languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian) are available on the disc in both subtitle and audio form including the ability to mix and match. And finally, a left-handed control option has also been added with four preset layout variations.

    Multiplatform Release

Square Enix cited strong fan demand after the reveal of the previously Wii U-exclusive Director's Cut when announcing PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 versions in the Summer of 2013. To approximate the Wii U experience on other platforms as closely as possible, the Director's Cut supports the PS Vita as a second screen on PS3 and SmartGlass on Xbox 360 while the PC version will support various mobile devices as well. All non-Wii U versions of the Director's Cut were handled by Snowed In Studios.

    PC Upgrade Plan

For the PC version of the Director's Cut, Square Enix announced an upgrade plan for those who already invested in the original game. This offer is limited to the Steam version.

    • New purchase (if you don’t already have the game): £12.99/€19.99/$19.99
    • Own the basic game (with no DLC): £6.99/€7.99/$9.99
    • Own the game and Missing Link DLC: £3.49/€3.99/$4.99

The PC upgrade on steam does not replace existing versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and the separate The Missing Link entry but rather adds a new one for the Director's Cut, keeping the vanilla version intact.

    Pricing Controversy

In North America, Square Enix decided to price the Wii U version of the game at $49.99 while the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions are priced at $29.99 or lower which caused uproar among interested Wii U users. Square Enix issued the following statement to Kotaku in response:

“This is the first time Deus Ex is available on the Wii U. We have an extensive feature set which makes full use of the Wii U GamePad, plus we were able to add exclusive features to the Wii U version which we think Nintendo fans will appreciate and truly immerse them into the world of Deus Ex like never before."

The UK's Wii U edition of the game is priced in-line with the other console releases at around £22 to £25 pounds, depending on the retailer. Mainland Europe again has a different RRP with the Wii U version priced higher at around €40 with the PS3 and Xbox 360 priced at around €30.
