The press conference held by Blizzard included a Q&A. This gem was in there:
16:50: Will Diablo III be coming to console? Lead designer Josh Mosqueira said we "are very, very serious" about bringing the "Diablo experience" to consoles, and they are hiring a team to help do so. "It will be awesome, stay tuned."

Diablo 3 very likely to end up on consoles
Woah, way to jump to conclusions. He could very well be talking about some sort of "Diablo-lite" XBLA spinoff in the same vein as Torchlight.
"Diablo experience" which I assume would mean something in a similar vein to Civilization Revolution.
"Diablo Experience," so were going to get Diablo Slot Machines that give you money in the real game if you play it before release! Don't forget Diablo pinball and Diablo Breakout that drop epic loots when you play for 18 hours straight!
Huh...my sarcasm made me interested in something like that.

That's my guess as well.
This has been pretty known for a while to anyone that pays attention to diablo 3.... I believe someone said they are only going to do it if they can figure out how to make it work well in consoles.
So really the only question here is was he just reconfirming that or was he stating that they actually came up with a satisfactory way to do it.
edit: either way, it is definitely designed to be a pc game so i wouldn't get my hopes up about the console version if it does happen.
IF it's the real deal (and not some watered down XBLA / PSN title) I wonder how they'll do with the auction house with real cash transactions. Sounds like something Microsoft and Sony wouldn't want to have in a game on their consoles, or at least without them seeing anything of said cash for themselves.
Now when will Diablo II come to consoles? It's the only one that hasn't, so I expect some type of downloadable version of it or whatever.
saw this today on twitter. D3 coming to at least the PS3. Blizzard posting job opening for software engineer for the PS3.

They'll have to slow it down. Especially for spellcasters who need to be able to cast spells at specific parts of the map in a split second to succeed at higher difficulties.
This.

I can't imagine playing a Necromancer in D2 on a controller and not having a frustrating experience. Or any other spell caster, really.

@august: So that's your way of telling me to avoid the PS1 version?
I've never played D1, so maybe it works well on console? It depends on how the spellcasting works in that game. Or maybe you could just play as a Warrior and have a good time. I only know D2 really, and a lot of the classes and abilities rely on speedy and accurate mouse pointing.
Good. The game deserves to be enjoyed by as many people as possible. And there must be at least a few people in Blizzard's upper management that salivate at the thought of console gaming income. Plus Torchlight on 360 proves how well those games can adapt to gamepad control. Not as precise as mouse and keyboard, but certainly not bad either.
I find it amusing that the elitest PC crowd are once again worrying about consoles dumbing down a beloved franchise. It makes sense in some cases, but Diablo is already as dumb as they get. I imagine it'll be handled like Torchlight, were certain mechanics are changed for the console version to make it better suited for the controller. Which is fine, the PC version is untainted and console owners get to enjoy the fun too.

ASLO
FUCK YOU CONSOLE 'TARDS.

It would be great if it had cross platform play but as they are likely going to have to change certain mechanics for the controller scheme it's not gonna happen I bet.
Will still be getting it on PC. If you have the choice it's a no brainer, always good to not be locked out of a game just because you don't own the platform it's on, though.
