The given name to a dynamic system that overlooks the progression and behavior of a player. It then changes the gameplay difficulty to either reward or punish the player accordingly.
Achievements are extra challenges added into video games that sometimes carry a point value or unlock bonus material, and are sometimes solely for bragging rights.
A bullet sponge refers to a non-player character or object that takes an unusually large number of bullets or other projectile to destroy (e.g. Tank in Left 4 Dead franchise).
Special codes or button combinations used to gain powers or advantages in a game. Generally hidden.
A game mechanic that adjusts the difficulty of the game automatically during gameplay as a result of the player's performance.
An Easter Egg is an intentionally hidden cheat or hidden content in a video game, also known as a "secret".
It may seem like bottom rung, but its your best friend when you just HAVE to find out if the Princess is in the castle and your date is waiting for you. Go ahead and hit those crosshairs until your shame is backlit by neon text outline, just don't expect any achievements!
Difficulty settings that let the player decide what aspect of the game will be challenging
Game content that can only be accessed by, or after, playing on the hardest possible difficulty.
Regular difficulty not difficult enough? Enable hardcore mode for a more brutal gaming experience.
In some games, either after completing the main game or as part of the game itself, players must replay a harder version of the same level. This is not classified as a different difficulty level, as the levels usually add new mechanics or enemies.
Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters which are controlled by whomever is playing the game.
Games in which, instead of playing on "Easy" or "Hard", players play on "Marine" or "Way of the Samurai".
This multiplayer game type has become a multiplayer mode of choice amongst hardcore fans of rhythm games. Two players play a song on the same difficulty in a battle for score supremacy.
Special locations in game that allow the player to manually save their progress.
When a game throws so many objects at the player that it's difficult or impossible to keep track
Sudden Death occurs when two or more players/teams have the same score at the end of the game. It can also be a penalty that activates when a player of match is taking too long. The players will then have to get rid of each other in a hurry.
Sometimes a co-op game allows the various players to choose their own individual difficulty levels. This is typically implemented by higher difficulty levels causing that player to be able to deal damage less easily and to also receive more damage from enemies.
