Digimon started as a "Digital-Pet" similar to the Tomagotchi, but made primarily for the male audience. The "Digital-Monster" toy was created by Akiyoshi Hongo, and released June 26th 1997. In , players would choose a Digimon, and take it on a journey through the digital world. The main difference between the Digital-Monster and Tomagotchi toys, are that the Digimom versions have adventure, and battle. The device also worked as a sort of , where it would count your steps, and work as an RPG. You would encounter Digimon to battle every several hundred steps, and your digimon would gain experience and Digivolve through these battles.
