" @SethPhotopoulos: yeah i do admit that they should've named him differently but the old dante isn't exactly an intresting character, even in dmc4 i preferred nero cause he was coming from some weird society "
Many people feel that Superman is the same way but that doesn't change the fact that he is an icon. Dante is no where near as iconic as Superman but he is still the face of those games and a lot of people really like him so when they drastically change him in a relatively short time period people get upset. However it seems that new Dante will be as smart ass as the old one was.

The new Dante seems to be badass in typical ways, whereas the old Dante was badass in clever and humorous ways. My problem with the trailer was that the new Dante makes me go "how neat", whereas the old Dante made me go "that was unexpected, badass, and kinda funny".
- New Dante puts out a cigarette on an enemy. This is badass by definition, but smoking a cigarette and burning someone with it is a very "typical" badass move that we've seen before. - Old Dante looks badass just sitting in a chair, answering the phone, and eating pizza.
- New Dante runs at a few enemies and shoots slowly while flailing his arms around randomly to achieve the "fancy" effect, looking as awkward as action in a B movie that's trying too hard. - Old Dante kicks off the floor on the back of an enemy and spins around the room using his foe as a skateboard, smashing and shooting enemies in his path before launching off a pool table, shooting the cue ball, and sending deadly pool balls at several enemies.
- New Dante pulls out a huge weapon and uses it in an expected way. He then throws a car at some enemies. Now that is a clever new badass move right there. I've never seen a car thrown at enemies before in a video game! /sarcasm - Old Dante gets stabbed by several scythes, but walks forward unimpressed, with one enemy dragging behind him that refuses to let go of his scythe. He puts on some music, then uses the blades still stuck in his arms and legs to kill of several enemies.
Old Dante is clever funny badass, new Dante is typical and looks like he's trying really hard to look badass. Even if you think the old Dante is corny and unfunny, you at least have to recognize the difference between the two, and why a lot of people who like the old Dante dislike the new Dante. Both qualify as badass, but one is by definition and the other is a little more interesting. I'd rather go "I've never seen anything like that before, that was badass", rather than "yes, I do believe that qualifies as badass by the way badass might be defined in a book. It was nothing unexpected or new, but I have now confirmed that was a badass thing to do and now I will continue watching to see what other ways he will express what a badass fellow he is".
A new character is fine, and pretty much necessary for the series to be rebooted. I just don't think they're putting in as much effort as they used to, and it's likely because "they" aren't the same people developing it. Then again, maybe the trailer was just a poor example of the character and the cutscenes.
@Guillotine: This is SUPPOSED to be Dante before he was Dante. Of course he is not going to be doing all that stuff, this is Young Dante. I doubt he's that confidant in his abilities to be doing all that. Right now he's a cocky little shit and he needs to grow..
Never played the devil may cry series... but can anybody explain to me how this is not the epitome of gay? ^
Btw i think the new dante doesn't look any better. but at least he doesn't look like a generic final fantasy character like the fag above does. in my opinion of course.

My issue is. It looks like the Ninja Theory head guy based the looks of the new danate on himself.
@The_Laughing_Man: yeah I think I saw that image somewhere and if thats the case than I can understand all the hate. I think if they made a few small changes like change his emo hairstyle and have him eat a sandwhich so he doesn't look so anorexic than he would look a lot better
" The fact that I hate his look has two reasons: 1. it is a blatant self-insert by the producer (or was it the director) of the game--that guy has the same douchy hair as the new Dante; 2. and this is key: Dante now looks like he cuts himself more than he cuts his enemies. "
Or in layman's terms: Dante now looks like complete douchebag.

I see this as a deadly sin of game making. Never put yourself into the game.
Well I am not supporting any character where the president of ninja theory, who btw only made an 80% gamerankings game puts his head on the main character and calls himself dante. In fact we should start a petition against this emo to change dante's hair back to white at the very least.

Why do you defend this new character so much? Not to be a jackass, but you seem to have some retort for every bad thing said about this guy. Being a die hard DMC fan myself, I will call it.
THIS NEW GUY ISNT COOL YET.
An unimpressive trailer shows what looks to be a standard character action game. I'm not saying I think the game looks bad, I'm just saying I'm unimpressed.
The only thing I really want out of this game is him getting white hair at some point. Only then will I be truly happy.
I'm a big fan of the Devil May Cry games. I don't mind Dante getting a redesign. I mean, he's a red and black color schemed trenchcoat wearing white haired handsome half-demon with a twin brother - not exactly stellar character design, but he pulled it off because Devil May Cry 3 was absolutely superb and one of the best third person action games ever created, surpassed (in my opinion) only by Bayonetta.
I don't like this redesign because of what was shown to me in another thread on this very site that most people seem to be overlooking- that the new design for Dante is exactly the goddamn same as the old one, except that the president of Ninja theory may as well have photoshopped his face over Dante's and called it a new inspiring direction.
I'd like to see a design for what Dante may have been like before he was seen in action in any of the games, since they were all obviously set at a time when he knew what he was doing and how to handle himself against demons and monsters- but what kind of arrogance does it take to take a beloved character and then stick your own damn face on them?
Far too often, games are saddled with safe main character designs that marketing guys like because the 18-34 year old male can get their wish fulfillment on. If this game plays like an updated version of DMC all the haters will get over Dante's new look real fast.
I have to wonder about the person who is actually upset at the design though. Oh my god he looks emo and gay! Insecure much? It's just a game boys. White haired Dante was supposed to fill your dark soul with liiiiiiight.
@Tesla: I don't think anyone hates the design in and of itself, necessarily. It's not bad... well, not any worse than the typical designs Dante usually gets. I'm just wondering what the thought process was behind slapping the president of your company's head onto the body of an existing character and calling it new.

Not every bad thing, it's just everything dealing with Emo and twilight which is not apparent and frankly it annoy's me when both are used by people whom know it does not quialify here.
I never said this guy was cool yet?
And I never said anyone had to be impressed with the trailer, it's one trailer, but coming down on it calling the game as a whole which isn't out yet, gay/emo/twilight fantasy and anything dealing with cutting seems well. Stupid. I have no problem saying I am skeptical about gameplay yet, but coming off of just playing the demo for Journey to the west I (twice) I can say the game is in capable hands. But I wait to see more trailers and actual gameplay before I come to a definite judgment.
But who cares if he got the white hair or not?
I defend a game that I am genuinely interested in. Only certain games I bother to try and defend, and usually only when the bitching about it has gotten absoluely RIDICULOUS. This one peeks and overflows the ridiculous. The last DMC I was interested in was 4 and that was because of Nero, I've never actually liked Dante. I liked Nero because of his story, Dante's story is so.. clusterfucked.. I'd support a whole reboot if this one goes well just to make the story more clear. So this is the first time that anything Dante has caught my attention.
Yet the complaints (character design alone, I know nothing about the game mechanics or how it will play, so, if the gameplay sucks, then I'll say it fucking sucks, but I won't say shit till it comes out and I get my hands on it. So, the defense comes to the character design choice) and absurd because over a lack of white hair mostly. It's stupid.
I didn't know that about it being the president's head. That's really dumb for sure, and makes me dislike the design. I guess I just don't understand the people that hate it only because Dante "looks gay".
@Tesla: I agree with you there. I mean, Devil May Cry 3 Dante was running around shirtless with a trenchcoat, baggy pants, army boots, and a sword covered with skulls and hair hanging down over his eyes, which, let's be honest, sounds pretty damn emo. Dante's design has always looked like the compiled fantasies of Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine fangirls the world over, and this one isn't that different. Dante just pulls the absurd look off because of his obscene amounts of not giving a fuck and acts of badassery. Were it not for having seen the comparisons of this new face they gave Dante with Ninja Theory's president, I was perfectly willing to give it a chance, and I suppose I still am- but I'm not going to be able to like the new face without a damn good explanation.
Not to be a douche but he doesn't look cool at all. In fact he looks terrible. If you are making a new Devil May Cry and creating a whole new look for the character, then don't call him Dante. Just rename him and refresh the Devil May Cry series as a whole.

" It's a pointless change to a boring franchise that's upsetting the fanboys who would rather have the vaguely feminine hot guy rather than the vaguely masculine hot guy. "
haha well put.
Still I don't like the new look, he looks like a teenager.
Gamers always say they want something new and unique out of franchises, but as soon as they're out of their comfort zone people flip. That's what I take from this.
I could hardly care less about the series, but seeing a comparison between this new Dante character design and how the lead game designer looked made me chuckle. It's an obviously shameless self insert of him into the game as the main character.

Hey my bed-head hair looks exactly like Edward Cullen's from Twilight! I guess that means we're all similar and shit, right?
New Dante has unkempt black hair. Ninja Theory president has a weird kind of half-assed mohawk. New Dante is a white teenager. Ninja Theory president is a middle-aged white guy.
Those are the similarities, people. Seriously, Dante looks absolutely nothing like the NT president.
the biggest problem i've seen and heard from the head developers in regards to devil may cry has to be the comment they made, stating "Dante wasn't cool 13 years ago, when the PS2 first came out" When a company developing a game doesn't even know the history behind a system and game then why are they touching it? Devil may cry originally came out in 2001 that's almost 9 years ago, and the PS2 came out in 2000 just barely 10 years ago. So where did the extra years come from? If they can make a good game i don't care about what the character looks like, but if they are picking up a franchise that is already in place and have no idea what they are doing then please leave it alone. This would be like someone taking resident evil saying it came out 25 years ago and the remake they are doing will have you hunting bears, lions and tigers, while not having anything to do with zombies. I'm sure just about anyone can take a franchise that is in place and if done right re-invent that franchise, but I don't have much hope with ninja theory they made heavenly sword which had a boring story and the gameplay was pretty weak, and enslaved looks like they took someone else's story and have the same gameplay from heavenly sword. So i'll wait for this game to come out, so i can try it out and see what they do with it, but from the picture i've seen of ninja theory's co-founder the character design for dante is just tameem antoniades.
