A dash of nostalgia, and a blast of new innovations. 1

If you ask me, Donkey Kong Country is a series in which a new entry has been long overdue.  Often regarded as one of the best series on the Super Nintendo, Donkey Kong as a character has lived on, but retired the Country name for over a decade.  But at last, Nintendo and Retro Studios have made the wise decision to revive the franchise.  No Konga.  No Jungle Beat.  No 64.  Just pure, old-school platforming Country.  And it's great.    A 2D game with multiple planes?  Neat. Much lik...

Another day, another floating head... 0

I’ve learned over the past year or so that making a retro-driven video game throwback is not quite as easy as it seems. Merely applying new textures for HD television screens is not enough, as it sucked the timelessness out of Turtles in Time. You can’t go so far as to completely rearrange everything about the original game’s themes (Blaster Master Overdrive’s “kid who lost his frog finds a magical tank replaced with a post-apocalyptic future where mankind’s survival hinges on a single ta...

    It's on like... 1

Nintendo's done well with their various "Wii-makes" over the past few years, and it was only a matter of time before Donkey Kong was given a chance to shine. I think Nintendo has finally found a good home for the big ape, as Retro Studios’ Donkey Kong Country Returns is a fantastic revival that does justice to Rare’s legacy, and should appeal to anyone who enjoys a great 2D platformer. DKC Returns may not be a remake in the literal sense, but it will certainly be immediately familiar to anyone...

The Monkey With The Tie Returns in a Big Way... 0

The Donkey Kong Country games were the games I started with in my childhood, so they were the ones I most remember when I first started gaming seriously in the mid 1990s. From the breakthrough graphics that seem ahead of its time, the platforming, the collect-a-thons, and the challenge, they were the platformers in the later years of the Super Nintendo. Since those times, Donkey Kong has been through a lot with the "disappointing to some" N64 game and numerous spinoffs like the Konga games ...

The Metroid Prime of Good Times 0

There’s a rapper named Riff Raff that I’m not a fan of. I don’t think his rhymes are very good and his beats don’t stand out in my memory. When I hear a great piece of music, my body physically spasms. I might shrink in or stretch out. I don’t do that when I hear a Riff Raff song. I sit very still and listen to music I’m not especially invested in. But in a weird way, I still love Riff Raff. Riff Raff posts on Vine several times a day, usually dancing around a room, showing off his new shoes and...

Motion controls hamper, but don't negate, the fun that Donkey Kong brings 0

I am a tremendous fan of the original three Donkey Kong Country games on the Super Nintendo. I spent dozens, if not hundreds, of hours playing those games over and over again. I loved the art style, the variety of stages, the tightness of the platforming, and the timeless music. When it was announced that another Donkey Kong Country game was being made, I was ecstatic. Retro being the studio to craft this new adventure was even more exciting. Unfortunately, it took me until recently to finally g...

Donkey Kong You Have Returned! 0

Donkey Kong is back to his old SNES self in, Donkey Kong Country Returns. Retro Studios is the same developer that brought back Metroid with the Metroid Prime series. Are they able to capture that same amount of success or do they fall short of every ones expectations? Are they able to take over where Rare left off and developer a new series of Donkey Kong games for a new generation?Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong return to there original roles, when the  game starts out with the volcano on Kong isla...

Donkey Kong Country Returns Review 0

Once again it is time to play as DK (Donkey Kong) as his horde of Bananas has yet again been stolen right under his nose. This time its a hypnotizing mask that gets all the animals on the island to do its dirty work. You get to choose slight variations in your path to defeat bosses that will try to stop you from ascending the Volcano for the final showdown.Graphically this looks like Donkey Kong Country with updated graphics. There's also the wider range of level types that you'll be taking on a...

    Exactly what you'd expect. 0

This game isn't all that exciting or new..but it is fun. Yes there are some new bits of shine..minor motion controls and such, but overall I feel like I'm playing a game from the 90s.  Controls: Ok, nothing special. There are a few motion controls. You'll be holding the controller sideways for this one. Which is fine, since I prefer to game while sitting. Graphics: Like everything else for the Wii..blech. I have a fantastic TV. Its huge with all the right features. My fantastic TV is wasted on t...

DK returns to its roots 0

I haven't played Nintendo brand sidescroller this good since Donkey Kong Country 3 on the SNES.  The game is basically that game with a graphical facelift and the ability for two players to play together simultaneously.  The game is pretty easy at the start but towards the end of the game it gets to the point where you are at a disadvantage if you try to play with a second player at the same time.  This is one of the only gripes I have about the game.  The last 25% of the game is definitely not ...

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. 0

I can't say how much of a surprise this was when Nintendo finally announced a proper sequel to my favorite game of all time--side by side with Banjo-Kazooie. It was never really a surprise that Miyamoto didn't take Donkey Kong Country's original release very lightly, the game captured the essence of gaming so well, that not even he could even dream to someday match that level of expertise. Still, Rare are a bunch of trolls, trolling Nintendo when they least expect. They went on to dominate the N...
