Donkey was getting ready to be turned in to Duloc. He was afraid to prove himself that he is a talking donkey. Once he ran away from Lord Farquaad's forces, he met Shrek, who scared away Farquaad's knights. Donkey was amazed by Shrek's abilities and followed him to his swamp. Donkey wanted to stay in and make waffles, but Shrek wanted him outside his house. During nighttime, hundreds of fantasy creatures arrived at Shrek's swamp because Lord Farquaad evicted them. Donkey knows where Lord Farquaad is and decides to join Shrek to help the fairytale creatures get off Shrek's swamp and back where they came from. At Duloc, Donkey and Shrek offered Lord Farquaad a deal after they complete a quest to rescue Princess Fiona from the Dragon's Keep and give Fiona to Farquaad in exchange for Shrek's swamp being free of fairytale creatures. As they made it to the Dragon's Keep, the Dragon surrounded Donkey, who later learns that Dragon is a girl who wants to make love to him. Shrek helped Donkey escape Dragon after he picked up Fiona. During that night, Shrek explained to Donkey why he prefers to live alone in his swamp. The next day, Donkey and Shrek witnessed Fiona beat up Monsieur Hood and his Merry Men with martial arts. Donkey got used to Shrek and Fiona's relationship as they went towards the windmill close to Duloc. At night, Donkey witnessed Fiona in her ogre form, to his shock. She explained to Donkey that she turns into an ogre at night and back to a human at day. She also said that she'll take true love's form once she has True Love's First Kiss. Once Fiona was picked up by Lord Farquaad, Donkey stayed outside Shrek's swamp. Donkey argued with Shrek about what Fiona has been through. Shrek told Donkey that Fiona called him a hideous creature. Donkey said that Fiona was talking about someone else. Dragon arrived and picked Shrek and Donkey up to object Lord Farquaad's wedding. As the sun falls, Fiona transforms into an ogre, to Lord Farquaad's anger. Dragon went inside the chapel and ate Lord Farquaad. After Shrek and Fiona married, Donkey stayed at Shrek's house during their honeymoon. He joined Shrek and Fiona to visit Far Far Away with the King and Queen's blessing.
