Now I know they don't map one to one, but a lot of the reception around this game reminds me of the one around fury road.

They are both long runnin franchises that came back after a long hiatus. They both are fantastic despite every reason not to be. Also they have a similar musical vibe. Maybe the makers of this game saw the movie and were inspired to go for it?

Anyways this game is great, did any one else get this sense too?

That's a pretty apt comparison actually. A long, troubled gestation period resulting in a lean, kickass ride. Definitely some shared spirit there!

I definitely see it. Just a non-stop action packed thrill ride, too.

Right they are both so confident in how great they are. Man having having almost no previous love for doom isn't required it's so good

My "hot take" on that comment would be, "Oh, they're both highly overrated?" Jokes aside, I suppose I could see that. I don't think Fury Road was ever as troubled as Doom was, but the Mad Max game definitely was troubled. I remember when Corey Balrog level Sony Santa Monica after God of War 2 to work on the game that was supposed to accompany Fury Road (not sure if the title name was known then).

I do think it is kind of funny that both of these games represent things most people rail on. With films its the "mindless action film that focuses more on action and explosions than actual story and characters" and with video games its "oh, just another mindless shooter starring a space marine". Both of those "hot takes" are accurate to the products but they are still received well and they do what they aimed for well.

I disagree Doom was actually great but I couldn't get into Fury road I really wanted to like it but the characters just annoyed the fuck out of me.

Pretty sure Doom is the new Citizen Kane of video games to trump the original Citizen Kane of video games also known as Doom.

The original Citizen Kane of videogames was Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold obviously.

In that it's fun and a momentary breath of relief from the standard blockbuster fare but ultimately nothing substantial?

More in the way he lists in the original post I think. But I guess you could call both nothing substantial depending on how you view these things. They aren't deep by any means, but the way their particular craftsmanship make us re-examine their respective mediums is substantial I think.

Well fury road was average and overrated to me, and i guess doom is close to that too but i do like the shooting a lot so it's not completely overrated.

You didn't list the most important aspects of your analogy.

Both have a simple story used as a vehicle for the action. Both are constantly moving with little sparse breaks to breath. Both are high octane with heart pounding action.

I'm surprised you didn't list these extremely obvious and most accurate things but yes it is the fury road of games.
