Poll Is Doom 2016 a sequel, or a reboot. (184 votes)

It's a reboot. It has no connection to the older games. 26%
It's a sequel. There are things that definitely connect it. 29%
I don't think it's a sequel, but I do think there are connections. It's just for fun though. Fan service. 34%
    I don't know. 11%

I won't go into detail as to how things may or may not connect, but I was just curious what the consensus was on whether the Doom series connects, or if they're just fan theories and not really connective. I'd love to believe that they are connected, and Doom 2016 is actually a sequel to Doom 64. To me, just the mystery of whether that's a thing adds to the (albeit goofy) story to Doom. What has me asking is that Doom Eternal's trailer leads me to believe it's more of a reboot following similar circumstances as the original games, or it's like an alternate dimension where things are happening all over again. What do you all think? I'm interested to know. I don't think Id/Bethesda had anything to say on it, and it's more a thing for fans to interpret themselves.

I voted I don't know because a reboot absolutely can have connections to older games.

It is a reboot, but I also think it is a sequel from the previous games given the way that the game starts off, but I don't know enough about original Doom and its lore to say for certain.

    It's a seqboot. Isn't that a thing?

If it's gotta be one or the other then it's a sequel.

@theht: To be clear, I was going to add both in the options, and in the title saying 'it's both a sequel and reboot' kind of thing, but I wanted to be absolute so I didn't add it. Yes, it can be both though. I am curious if it's just a reboot, or if it's also a sequel. One or the other really. If you want to say it's both a reboot and sequel, that is fine, I just didn't end up adding it as an option. I also wanted to refrain from using the word remake, but maybe that would fit more with what I was trying to say (though I don't really consider Doom 2016 a remake).

    @ntm: Fair enough!

I think Doom 3 was actually more of a reboot to be honest. Like, Doom 2016 was definitely a reboot in the sense that they revived a dormant franchise, but Doom 3 was a reboot in that and basically every other sense (story and gameplay). Doom 2016 aimed to capture and modernize the spirit of old Doom's fast gameplay rather than get away from it, and it also has enough connections narratively that go just a bit deeper than being mere winks and nods that I feel safe calling it a sequel.

@theht: In Doom 2016, you can find the soul cube sitting around somewhere, as well as the Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3. I felt like those were maybe just fun nods, rather than true connections though with Doom 3.

Definitely a bootquel. Especially with Doom Eternal apparently retelling Hell On Earth.

On the other hand, there's something to be said for the plot of Doom as a series just being "Mars then Hell then Earth, over and over again". Adds an interesting meaning to "Eternal", at least.

doom guy is in a time loop like the All You Need Is Kill scenario, where he loops back in time every time he dies and keeps his skills and memories of his past lives.

Well the Doom Marine guy already has a legend built around him, so clearly he's done this before. This site used the term "soft reboot" to describe the new God of War, and I think that applies in this case as well. It acknowledges what's come before, but it's also meant to introduce new players to the series.

To use similar examples for TV and movies, Doctor Who and Casino Royale fall into this category.

    Both, really.

This is the real answer. Doom 2016 has a story and events that happen throughout it. It's a thin story, but the point is that it's there. Doom 1 and 2 don't have a story. They have an excuse to fire a shotgun at ugly monsters in areas that don't actually look like anything other than video game rooms. Any nods that Doom 2016 gives to the original games can't really be anything more than that because there isn't really a plot to nod to.

Doom 3 was more explicitly a reboot, as someone said above. Doom 2016 is pretty open about how the Doom Marine has done this stuff before. Doom 3 very much implies that nothing like demons invading Earth or Mars has ever happened before that game starts.

A reboot can also be a sequel. Jurassic World is an example of this.

original Doom has like a sentence of plot so it doesn't matter, you punch and shoot demons in the face.

@frostyryan: Something I kind of appreciate about the game is that the story is there if you want to look into it more (through environmental pieces, or digging deeper in the backstory with the text you can read about environments or enemies), but like the Doom Slayer, you don't have to give a damn about it and just go about killing demons. The way the Doom Slayer reacts to everything makes it seem that way too. The story is goofy in a good way though, and I'm into it so to me, it matters to a degree.

I think it’s a reboot, though id is winking and nodding at their past.

its a requel? Like a sequel that rebooted the franchise to make it better?
