I found Doom to be pretty boring myself to be honest, but it's their opinion, so whatever.

Since this thread looks like it could use some more tension I'll throw out my rant about how Borderlands is the most tedious and boring video game I've played with friends in many many years. I don't like Borderlands and I don't like anything else that developer does. To sound even more like a dick I feel they probably stumbled into a well liked game thanks to a couple good ideas that seemed to trump their shitty execution and lackluster design talent. It's a sloppy game with no real mechanical depth and an agonizing amount of mindless repetition from an extremely unreliable developer. I realize I sound like an ass so... Gears of War had incredibly fun co-op.

See, video games can be fun :P

@lv4monk: I feel the same way about Borderlands. It should be a game I like in theory. But for Gearbox, at least I do like the Brothers in Arms games.

@artisanbreads: I should be more fair, Duke Nukem was pretty crazy for it's time and I've never played Brothers in Arms. I can't call them ALL bad. I really do hate Borderlands, though.

Halo 1 and Halo 3 were great campaigns. Halo 3 was especially fun in co-op.

Brothers in Arms RTH30 is amazing. Great story, good squad and suppression tactics. I don't think any FPS has done anything similar in a long time.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 (and 1) was a whole lot of fun. But the multiplayer took the spotlight there.

Crysis and Far Cry 3 were similar in some ways but both unique and fun in their own ways.

Medal of Honor Allied assault was a great PC shooter back in the day. Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2 were also fun and over-the-top military shooters.

I've never played them but those Metroid gamecube games are always talked about in such hush tones.

Bulletstorm is completely underrated in my opinion.

Rainbow Six Vegas (1&2) were great tactical FPSs. Story was eh but otherwise they were lots of fun and very challenging.

Of course the Bioshock games were great (yeah even Bioshock 2) but a game called Singularity was also just as good but flew under the radar completely.

Wolfenstein The New Order came out like 3 years ago. Got a lot of praise on GB and elsewhere.

Metro 2033 and Last light, NOLF, Riddick...

There are a lot of great shooter campaigns. I've only named a fraction of what's out there. Are these better than DOOM? Maybe not, but that's completely subjective. It's their opinion but I don't agree that DOOM is the best shooter campaign in 15 years.

Yeah, none of these are better than the new DOOM.

The only thing in semi-recent memory that comes close, is Bad Company 2. But even it is not quite as good as the new DOOM.

EDIT: Wolfenstein TNO is also up there

Titanfall 2's was better than Doom. Better than Half Life 2. Better than Halo 3. Better than Bioshock. Better than pretty much any campaign I've played in an FPS.

All this talk about DOOM is making me want to go back and maybe give that game another shot. What initially bummed me out about it was the amount of upgrading systems they crammed into that game along with the different challenges, runes and cells and shit you had to find. It just felt cluttered and confusing.

I would rather they strip the upgrading to the weapons only, and get rid of all that other shit, and then just have the secrets be secrets and not obligations for getting points for the upgrading.

@onemanarmyy:Technically I guess it's a shooter because there is lots of it, or a platformer/shooter hybrid of sorts. It's just not a first-person one.

But yeah Jazz JackRabbit is great, and the sequel is even better imo.

I've played half way through Wolfenstein the New Order twice. Got stuck, at what turned out to be the same part, put it down for a day or two, and ended up moving on to something else. I may go back and try to beat it-without restarting.

This is the most weird thing about the blatant statement they made as well. Obviously very different games, but how they can say that and not even acknowledge Titanfall 2 when it came out the exact same year is just so mind numbing for me. While I haven't thought this through enough to say confidently, I probably side with you that Titanfall 2 might be the best campaign I've ever played.

Doom 2016 is a great game I played the hell out of it but it's extremely overrated in my opinion. The original F.E.A.R. that is 12 years old now to me hasn't been topped in terms of satisfy firefights and amazing AI it makes Doom 2016 feel mediocre.

It sure is it's kinda of depressing that a FPS that is 12 years old makes every other FPS look meh.

I'll also agree there are better campaigns out there, but as post #2 says it is subjective, it is almost entirely determined by what you want out of a shooter campaign.
I'll post a few i think are better, but first i want to explain the reasons why i think DOOM isn't as good as a lot of people say, the feel of the running, the shooting, the game balance and platforming are all fine but it's pretty one note, the executions and item hunting to get upgrades are repetitive and tedious, and how it got runner up for the best story is beyond me, it's a series of self aware jokes which do raise a few chuckles but don't last the length of the game.
Critically it's easy to say games like System Shock, Bioshock and Singularity are 'better' because of the added RPG layers, it adds a feeling of depth and value, hell even DOOM has those upgrade choices now, but there's something to be said about a straight forward FPS, the sort which don't get made anymore.
Half-Life - Of course, it can't be overstated how influential this game was in creating a fully connected and 'real' world to explore in a first person shooter, which lead to...
Half-Life 2 - Which was a technical marvel and riveting game for me from start to finish, and the concealed or unexplored stories of the HL universe only served to make the first game even more intriguing.
Condemned 2 - I hate horror games, i don't enjoy them, but there's a layer of psychological thriller explored here which i couldn't ignore and was very glad, and relieved, to see it through.
Arma 3 - They patched the story in as episodes after the game released, if you can handle the simulation nature of the game, there's a surprisingly gripping story to be found within.
Red Faction - A miner's strike, turned guerilla group, turned James Bond in space explosive extravaganza, i have a lot of love for this game.
Perfect Dark - It's cooky, it's bananas, the ai interactivity is near unprecidented, it has a ton of weapons and gadgets which are all brilliant, i spent too much time playing this game as a kid.
Urban Chaos: Riot Response - This game needs a remaster, from the makers of Batman: Arkham Asylum comes the Playstation 2's best FPS in my opinion.
Soldier of Fortune - There's a tactile feel to this game, it's so fast and visceral, the story is pretty basic as you'd expect from a game with the Soldier of Fortune license, but they never shove that in your face, with unrealistic weapons, bizarre levels and satisfying depictions of gore it's a beautiful reminder of the golden era of Quake 2 engine games.

I'm of the opinion that DOOM is an incredibly fun and well playing game in a less good campaign. After a while, the spectacle couldn't keep up with what you were doing, which basically boils down to (again, really fun) arena scenarios that feel same-y.

In terms of shooters from 2016, Titanfall 2 may not be as fun to play as DOOM, but I think it is a better game, because it feels like it keeps the momentum better and escalates things both from a gameplay and narrative perspective.

Yes, a criminally slept on game. Came out when everyone was focusing on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 so it got lost in the shuffle. I would even be happy with just a straightforward PC port of that game. Very good game.

I LOVED Half-Life 2 back in the day, but I don't know if I would consider it one of the best FPS campaigns out there. I've tried to replay it several times, and once I get to the section where I have to drive around on the boat, my motivation to continue just sort of dies. The vehicle sections in the game really, really drag on, and the story is very sparse. I will commend the game on how it tells its story through the environments rather than NPC dialogue though - just traveling through the world, and seeing how much the combine fucked up the planet is haunting, and really makes you want to fuck them up. That being said, I dunno if I would consider it the best fps of all time.

I also think Bioshock 1 doesn't have that great of the a story. There is a LOT more dialogue than Half-Life 2 though, but it all just builds up to the twist. I completely agree that the twist was freaking EXCELLENT, but it's like they forgot that they had to actually conclude the game after that, and everything afterwards was just very sub-par.

Anyway, enough of shooting down people's opinions. I'll add mine to the list:

Metro 2033 is by far my favorite FPS game. I feel that it's one of the few games that absolutely NAILS the atmosphere of desperation and helplessness. The world is bleak and hopeless, and it feels like you're just waiting to die. Despite that though, the game manages to try and make you feel hope, rather than wallowing in the misery of the world. The 'good' ending in particular makes you feel like you've actually accomplished something, and that maybe things won't be so horrible after all. I will be the first to admit the shooting and stealth mechanics in this game aren't very good, so Doom definitely has it beat in the game play department hands down, but everything else I feel Metro 2033 does significantly better, which is why I think it's the better campaign of the two.

@random45: The vehicle sections of Half-Life 2 are definitely that game's obvious lowpoints. But its standout moments remain extraordinary. Doom '16 maintains a very consistent pace, pitch, and level of quality but lacks any big swings in either direction, good or bad. The comparison of the two games essentially comes down to what is more valuable--a long, steady, evenly-spread experience or a varied roller coaster ride whose gambles occasionally stumble but more regularly hit massive jackpots.

As you mentioned as well, there is an element of relativism that makes this conversation difficult. And not the dismissive "I guess opinions, right lol?" kind of relativism. Half-Life 2 ended up being a radical shift for shooters because of the way it built encounters around physics and combat puzzles. For example, no one at that point had ever seen anything as dynamic as a Gravity Gun in a first-person shooter. Choices like that made Half-Life 2 the most important shooter of the early-mid 2000s, something that truly expanded and reconceptualized the ceiling of possibility in shooting experiences. Now, some thirteen years later, a lot of what it pioneered has become old hat. Boring, even. Because now we've seen that kind of gameplay in spades and we've even seen it improved upon.

Does that make it a "better" campaign than Doom? Not necessarily. (EDIT: And "better" is largely a silly, shortsighted distinction we're trying to give.) But it's easy in retrospect to forget what a seachange Half-Life 2 brought.

@random45: Metro 2033 is excellent when played on Ranger Hardcore in the Russian language. Metro 2033, DOOM and Wolfenstein the New Order are the recent singleplayer fps I would recommend to anyone.

Titanfall 2 has some cool moments, but is overal short and the standard fps sequences are not much better than your average CoD campaign. Now if that game had some Pilot vs Pilot fights without hitscan weapons...

The best FPS campaigns to me are Halo 3 and MW2.

Halo 3 came out while I was in Uni and i can't tell you how many times i beat that campaign with various groups of friends. I don't think i'll ever have another gaming experience like Halo 3 again, it took over peoples lives for the year. I knew at least 20 people who had no interest in gaming before buy 360's so they could join in on campus wide matches, and who just got sucked into Halo 3. Halo 3 was like Pokemon Go, everyone was playing it.

On my personal list I had Doom higher than Titanfall 2, but I actually enjoyed the campaign of Titanfall 2 better than the Doom campaign. Doom was just super intense combat that I really enjoyed. It had a good feel to it, and visually it is one of the best looking games.

But as a campaign, I thought Titanfall 2 was much more interesting. The time mechanic was so incredible, and took Titanfall 2 from a generic shooter campaign to one of the most unique shooter campaigns in recent memory. As a game I enjoyed Doom more for the relentless action, but I personally think the campaign in Titanfall 2 was better.

@ripelivejam: Yeah, I know, I'm in the minority on that one. It has a lot of stuff that I appreciate (a story for Doom [albeit pretty goofy], it's a sci-fi, and it has some stuff in common with Metroid Prime among other things), but in the end, I struggled to find motivation to get through it, in large part due to the shooting honestly, which is the most applauded aspects. It's just my tastes, but beyond the rendition of old Doom themes, I wasn't in love with the soundtrack either (I'm not dissing it because it's loved, I'm just saying that soundtracks can add a lot to the experience, and Doom's didn't do a whole lot for me). The thing about the shooting is just that the enemies when shot weren't reactionary enough, and it didn't feel satisfying to me. I understand that to some, partly what makes it fun is, the harder difficulties (I think) and how it makes you have to think about what you're doing. I only got so far on the second to the hardest, and it was only moderately better. That said, my experience of it was on what is probably the worst system to play it on (at least visually), which is the Xbox One. If it were up to me, and I could realistically play it where I wanted to, I would have gotten it on the PS4, as my PC wouldn't be able to run it, but my brother wanted it on the One. It can get pretty blurry, to an otherwise great looking game. Hey, hopefully the 'Scorpio' could make it better, as Phil Spencer said I believe. Something I did like in Doom, though was the voice work.

I should play F.E.A.R. I wasn't that into PC gaming yet when that came out so I kind of missed the boat. Reading the comments, it seems like a seminal fps that any fan of the genre should play.

@hippie_genocide: Definitely. It still looks good considering its age, still plays good, the enemy AI is still impressive with how they communicate with each other to try and flank and ambush you and the horror aspects are well put together for the most part. Biggest negative I can say about that game is that some of the level design, especially in like the middle part becomes very repetitive and bland, having you walk through office buildings and warehouses that all look the same.

@sinusoidal: Bulletstorm not only given you the tools for the mayhem, but it has a story to match it AND pull off a comment on us who plays it all the while. The campaign is utterly stupid yet owns it in all the right ways - Bulletstorm is madness and it is PERFECT. One of my all time favorite games.

i'm willing to appreciate a difference of opinion but almost half of your list are games that i was completely bored with and by the time i finished them i was glad they were over. Doom felt awesome to the last moment where you stuck the BFG in the final boss's mouth and blow the top of his head clean off.

@wumbo3000: I appreciate what infinite tries to do but I fell of the story mainly because of the gameplay. The breaking point was the boss fight that repeated itself three times. By the time I completed it I couldn't care less about the ghost intention or what my current objective was.

But related to thread topic I'd like to throw Wolfenstein: New order. It's flawed in story consistency but makes it up with gameplay and aesthetics that's impressive because of the historical basis with futuristic tweaks.

As a very avid fan of original Doom I must say that despite this I still enjoyed the campaign of Doom 2016 more than any FPS campaign I've played since original Doom, perhaps with the exception of Doom 64. But to each his own I guess...

@jec03: I definitely don't think DOOM is overrated, but FEAR is one of my favorite shooter campaigns ever. The AI was so fun to fight.

This is literally the first time I've seen someone say either of the R6 Vegas games have some of the best campaigns. They are probably the most serviceable campaigns in a shooter last generation, the perfect thing to mess around with when you arent playing the multiplayer. Also those game's rely so heavily on their cover mechanics that I don't think I would even lump them in the FPS genre completely.

I think every mode in both of those games is great. Enjoyed both the campaigns a lot. However I do consider them a FPS/TPS mix.

Doom calibre? I wouldn't say that myself but they are really fun. I really like that kind of squad based tactical shooter and the genre hardly exists anymore.

Serious Sam wasn't mentioned. I read through this entire thread and no one mentioned Serious Sam The First & Second Encounter. If you like the combat of Doom, but don't care about backtracking for secrets, rune trials, or the checkpoint system, go for it. The HD Version is pretty great.

Doom is a beast all its own, only comparable to games in its own series really.

I can't say it makes too much sense to compare Doom to story heavy first person campaigns. Bioshock Infinite blew me away and Doom blew me away for reasons that aren't similar in the slightest.

I would say the Titanfall 2 is better than DOOM's!

As for the rest of your list, I've lost a lot of love for Bioshock over the years, so I don't know that I'd personally put up there. Even when I considered it great, I never really loved the actual gameplay, but that's just me.

I prefer Halo 2 to the rest of the series, but the original game, and 3 are both fantastic. They're a unique flavor of first-person-shooter, which earn them a lot of points in my book.

And thumbs up for Black Ops.

I said everything I said as a big fan of nearly all of the rainbow six games. Love the games to death, but I found it comical seeing the vegas games as best shooter campaigns in FPS history.

Doom was awesome but had too many blood covered space hallways to be impressive. I've been through a million blood covered hallways in videogames...

The Rainbow Six Vegas campaigns. The story may not be all that memorable, but the locations you go through are great. You can play on your own and command squad AI team mates, or you can play co-operatively with friends. You can play on Normal difficulty, or when you bump it up to Realistic, the gameplay gets even better. Night and Thermal vision, flashbangs, smoke grenades, remote detonated C4 charges. Shooting people while hanging from ropes. Peeking under doors and tagging enemies, sometimes you get caught in the open, other times, you can plan ahead how to tackle tough encounters. I even played through Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on Realistic using only a Desert Eagle pistol, making it the only FPS campaign I've played through three times. Easily among the best fps campaigns of all time, still good looking games now.
