Thanks to Brad for pointing to this thread. I don't know how I missed it, I've been a duder since the beginning of Giant Bomb and a DOOM fan for far longer. It's been my most anticipated game since I finished Doom 3 on the OG Xbox (yeah, I didn't have a PC). I salute @vaiz and all the rest for your tireless dedication, and just wanted to let you know, you were never alone!! ;)

And see how our faith has been rewarded? DOOM 2016: AKA my favorite shooter/campaign in recent memory, bar none.

    DOOM? More like...BOOOOOOOOM!! ...

@vaiz: some people plant a tree to feel accomplishment in life, you don't need to do that anymore, you planted this wonderful thing, thanks for believing

@davosplat: Holy shit, I know I've made it when this thread gets a shout out from top men. Yeah this wait has been a labor of great love and frustration. I feel like the guy with the decade old DNF preorder.

@brad Your amount of enthusiasm about playing this game was a large indicator to me that my wait hadn't been for naught.

@vaiz I'm not sure how I missed this thread, but full marks to yourself and to everyone else who posted. I read this all the way through from the beginning, and I was laughing so hard, especially the bit about concrete. Glad that you got the game that you wanted as did I (and others).

I don't know what the likelihood of campaign DLC is, but I'd be totally down for it.

I'm glad I read through this thread after the game was 1.) out, and 2.) amazing, because it was a feel-good story from the very beginning.

This game fills me with hope. Because RAGE was kinda bad, and that bummed me out. I was ready for DOOM to be bad too, and I've never been more glad to be SUUUUUPER wrong. I'm having more fun than I've had with any other shooter. Ever.

Damn, this is a hell of a game. Definitely one of the bigger surprises I've come across in the last few years in terms of gap between expectation and reality.

Didn't feel like this demanded a full thread, but after fighting the first official boss of the game I have to say it's kind of annoying the chainsaw and BFG are given their own buttons. On the one hand, I get it; they have extremely limited ammo capacity and as such it makes sense the player only uses them when they find it absolutely necessary.

On the other hand, even with my Health and Armor upgraded 4 times over and several weapon masteries already unlocked, I was finding the second phase of this fight near impossible to make it past the 25% health mark until I searched online for strategies and was reminded I had a fully loaded BFG, and that that weapon is what those rotating green orbs are for. I constantly forget I have the chainsaw as well since neither are on the weapon wheel, though that's not as much of an issue for me since I wanted my first run to be on the standard, medium difficulty and ammo has been pretty plentiful so far.

Part of me wishes these two specialty weapons could still be accessed through the weapon wheel so I could at least be reminded of their existence every time I go to change arms, but I suppose I understand why the developers erred on the side of hiding them from the player. If you can't remember you have it when you really need it, that's a good sign you won't accidentally blow your load when you don't.

@rorieDoom is the only game I've actually finished in maybe two years. Which maybe isn't surprising given my levels of hype for it, but still. That goddamn game is amazing.

@nodima: I don't disagree. The first boss took fuckin forever for me to beat until i realized if i BFG'd him and then shot the fuck out of him while he was stunned, he dropped a fuck ton of health and ammo. But I definitely wish the BFG was in the wheel instead of requiring me to press X. Same with the chainsaw. Though chainsaw fuel seemed to be all over the goddamn place.

How have I only just found this thread? How do you feel now @vaiz, in a world in which Doom has a legitimate shot at Game of the Year? I haven't finished the game yet (just did the first boss fight) but holy cow it's amazing.

Oh wow, I posted on the first page of this thread back when I would attach gifs to a lot of my posts...

Real interesting going through this stuff now though and knowing that we did eventually get Doom 4 and it turned out great. I still need to fire up that bad boy.

I finished the campaign a few weeks ago and this is my easy GOTY thus far. Are we going to get some single player DLC, or what? Seems that's what people are coming to the game for, and I'd certainly be into some expansion action.

Really excited for the next two episodes. All the clips from the interview with the Creative Director that came from Naughty Dog and Pacific Rim are energetic as hell; he's a great quote! Loved his bedding during the patreon credits.

Definitely would like to contribute to Danny's venture soon, I see Gamespot has been producing near-feature-length documentaries since Danny left so I'm still a bit curious why he felt he had to venture out on his own to do this (to that end, there's a fairly long clip on his Youtube that goes into detail about how jaded working at Gamespot was making him feel, I'm mostly just talking out of my ass here) but I will say between the first part of this DOOM dcoumentary and the shockingly entertaining Rocket League documentary I'm very excited to see what noclip has in store.

I think if anything, Danny just wanted the autonomy to produce content as quickly as he could turn it around and Gamestop was not the platform for that; that said, I'd wager he lucked into the Rocket League devs being super fun to listen to and it's hard to mess up a DOOM/id documentary considering its heft in the culture. I'm curious to see how his project evolves and handles a wet blanket set of interviews.

Anyway, this really wasn't the thread for that...first part of noclip's DOOM documentary is excellent and you should definitely watch it! Very cool to see that DOOM 4 1.0 footage and how one of its core mechanics worked its way into DOOM basically intact, just bigger, stronger and more uncut.

@nodima: It's possible that Danny just wants to work on making these documentaries full time, and while he had opportunities to do in-depth interviews while at Gamespot, he had to squeeze those in between his other work duties like hosting The Lobby and other stuff.

Definitely looking forward to the next episode, which apparently is dedicated to how they made the first level of DOOM!
