Rip and Tear, Until it is done
DOOM is truly a masterpiece when it comes to a first person shooter campaign. The rush this game delivers you as you gnaw your way through hundreds of demons, never stopping because the DOOM guy would be bored otherwise, the sense of tension is so lost from FPS. There is no, take a break and hide under cover. There is no, just hang back and the NPCs will do half the work. There is no, tired out military personal we need to care bout as they blab about their exposition we don't care. Why do we play FPS? To poke out behind walls and take cheap shots. To fall into a rout and calm progression where the story drives us to the next section. THIS is a CRUTCH.
DOOM drives me to the next section, because the adrenaline pouring into my heart is screaming for more demon's to dance with my shotgun. There is a good story, it's way better than it needed to be. But the rush, the tough situations that you barely scrape through. The situations where you get a handle on things and lay unquestionable waste and awe to those who oppose. And you never rest for a minute. You're heart is pounding, your hands are clammy. Another game would have you pause and take notice, but DOOM is so engaging in these moments, you'd have to feel nothing to pause the deathly delicacies is lays at your table. DOOM is what I imagine the real Masterchief to be in Halo. An unstoppable force. Except the DOOM guy is insatiable for the hunt.
