Dota 2 has so much depth in its mechanics, character interaction, but is insanely demanding of its players.

If you haven't started to play a MOBA game or A-RTS, do yourself a favour and never start to play one. These games are entirely too complex, and sport a in-game social scene that is straight up way more toxic than anything you think you would encounter in the early days of online PC gaming with Quake, or Xbox-live playing CoD and the like. You would think that it's mainly a behavioural issue that happens with elite players that have managed to tame the beast that is game; situational awareness, map awareness, and mastering all of the mechanics this game throws at you (there are way too many to list). In truth, even the terribly low skilled players of this game have a sense superiority over more terrible players, even if they themselves are drowning in leagues of players that are 1000 times better than them. This doesn't even include the players on smurf accounts that come into the noob zone and utterly crush everyone and tell them how shit they are.

This game works best when you are able to play with 4 friends that are able to say the shittiest things to each other without anyone ever becoming upset. That's an impossible thing to ask of anyone. You can play this game without any of that, for sure, but if you and your crew aren't challenging each other constantly, you will never improve and this game doesn't sit well when your skill is stagnate.

The reason I say you need friends is because language filters in this game are absolutely meaningless. You can specify that you only speak English, and the match making system will do it's best to find a match in your skill bracket with other English speaking players in your specified regions. The main problem with this is I would say you're about 65-80% more likely to not find any players that speak your language in your designated region. It's a real bummer.

I've spent nearly 6,000 hours since late 2011 logged into Dota 2, and while I think it's an incredibly amazing game my enjoyment is greatly hindered by my frustration, with friends and random strangers alike, that do nothing but insult you and your skill and nitpick every little thing that you do. You might think you have a good reason to do the things you do in the game, but there are always going to be people there to tell you what you did wrong and why you're a shitty player in a shitty skill bracket despite themselves also being matched with you in said bracket.

God I love Dota 2, but I definitely don't recommend playing this awful fucking game.

When you make a bold claim like I have in the title of this review, you can reasonably expect push back. After all only the Sith speak in absolutes, or so Star Wars teaches us.But when you have played as many different video games as I have (easily over 1000) for as long as I have (over thirty years) I think I can safely say I have a good idea of what good game looks like. Or in this case a special one. To me DOTA 2 is one of the very best games I’ve ever played, and the best multiplayer game ha...

      Dota 2 Review 0

Dota 2 is not a new game - I mean this in multiple ways. For one, its official release was in July 2013 (at the time of writing, it is currently May 2016); but, even before that, it was put into a playable beta in 2011 - five years ago. But, if you are aware of the origins of the game, you already know that Dota 2 is a facsimile of its progenitor - Defense of the Ancients, a Warcraft III mod that was popular in 2003. I won't get into the history of the franchise in this review; but I do recommen...
