A new character, a new land, and a new console combat focus. Dragon Age II will incorporate a lot of "new." But in addition to all this, the RPG follow-up will sport a fresher "visual style" that will set it apart from its predecessor. The first two pieces of oily concept art revealed last week gave us an idea of what to expect. Now we know for sure what it'll look like.

As part of Game Informer's rolling coverage working up to the game's reveal in the magazine proper, the first two images of the game have been made public. Check them out:

== TEASER ==I think I wet my pants when I put my eyeballs on these last night. I'm not much of an art guy, but I know what makes me feel good on the inside, and this kind of oily, yet realistic-looking presentation certainly does. Oddly enough, I think when we start seeing the volcanic plumes of blood and viscera Dragon Age is known for start emerging in future images and videos, we'll actually walk away thinking this style is all the more beautiful for it. Wouldn't crimson go great with this?

A small-ish note about Hawke, the featured character in those shots: Game Informer has since confirmed my suspicions that Hawke will be a voiced character. Like Mass Effect'sShepard, you'll be able to answer questions and otherwise interact as Hawke.

After a bit of thought, I'm thinking this is a good direction. Sure, Hawke won't be "you" like your previous Dragon Age character, but he'll actually be able to meaningfully interact with characters and react to plot reveals. He won't be the shoulder-shrugging silent sociopath that your last character was.

There seem to be two groups of people: people that really like the art style and those who find these screens to be completely ugly.

I'm afraid to say I'm in the latter group.

I'm not going to say anything about about the graphics seeing that there's a year left. I hope it get's better and I wonder what the console version will look like.

I guess its early...maybe...but the graphics look really bad. This looks way way way worse than DAO so yeah idk. I guess the art style is cool, but when I look at those pictures the first thing i think is not "look at that art style" its "why do the graphics look so shitty".

    No, it really isn't.

    As someone put it:
Mass Effect let you watch Sheppard act the game out.
Dragon Age let you live the game as your character.

Yeah, that second screenshot sorta looks like ass.

I imagine that a significant level of polish will be applied before release, but I really don't know why they'd release a screenshot that looks that bad in the meantime.

    It's very strange.

So far so good for me, and I'm sure it will look better a few months from now. Also, diggin the new more Mass Effecty direction they are taking the franchise. Hope to play it in a year or so.

I thought what was awesome about Dragon Age was that it was more old school?  So why the heck is Bioware trying to streamline it?   I didn't mind Mass Effect 2's "shooter orientated" or "dumbed down " approach because I had Fallout and Dragon Age. Why does it seem like Bioware wants to make shooters and action games instead of RPGs now?

This is the "fresh" new art style? I'm not saying it's bad, it just doesn't look all that different from the first game to me. Maybe I'm just crazy.

The second one's bland and soupy ground texture and angular character models remind me of an early 2000s fantasy RPG.

What happened with the cool look they had in the concept art they showed us a few days ago? I'm not seeing any of that in these screenshots... This to me looks kinda generic (though with a slight twist) still. :(

I like the look of the graphics, but those screens are shitty. They could have done more to showcase it, like show an environment that's not totally boring and ugly.

I never comment on things because I'm too lazy to log in just to give a peice of my mind; but that second photo looks like psp graphics.  And I dont see this new "art style" that is supposedly in these pictures, other then the new color palette  it just looks like Regular Dragon Age: Origins but with the settings turned to low.

Can't say these shots really define their new art style or improved graphics tbh, but theres still another year so who knows. Curious about this more streamlined direction in character they are going for, the ME route as it were which I'm fine with being a fan of ME 1 & 2.

DA never really grabbed me but their new focus of characters and a more engaging combat system has me interested.

Perhaps these screens do show improvements over DA:O (I won't really know until I see it on my own TV), but the graphics do not look impressive in the slightest.  I'll be on the fence about buying Dragon Age 2 it comes out.  So far, these preliminary screens aren't doing anything to pick up my interest.

@BradNicholson:  I like Giant Bomb's non-professional demeanor, but I expect more from someone reporting on news than fanboyish pants wetting over two screenshots.

I kind of wish Bioware would instead do what Jade Empire did which is do like 6 pre-made "official" characters rather then male/female versions or a character creator. Making a custom DA:O/Oblivion/Demon's Souls character always looked ugly and something about male Shepard just looks...freaky

Umm, what art style are we talking about here exactly?  The only vibe I'm getting from these is "blurry, drab textures".  I'd struggle to pick these out of a line-up of Dragon Age 1 screenshots.

And what is "a new console combat focus" supposed to mean?  What's the source on that?

I think it's too soon... DA:O is my all time favourite game and even though Bioware are "Kings of the RPG" there is no way DA2 will be better than the first.
Yes, when you look at the full sized pic the ogre looks blocky.

If you check the thread where this news actually broke, you can see a comparison between II ogres and I ogres. They don't look all that different, it's just that this game is missing a bunch of tech, like lighting and effects. I gotta say, I'm not a fan of these changes to the gameplay, which seem to be very console-y changes. I'm fine with voice though. After playing ME just clicking text seemed kinda weird. Looks like my dwarf rogue Emily won't be making an appearance though. :(
