    If I played Dragon Age: Origins for the PC with a retail disc copy would my saves transfer to a Steam copy of Dragon Age 2? 
     
    I pose the same question to transferring content from a disc of Dragon Age: Origins to a Steam copy of Awakening.
     
    I have also considered purchasing the Steam version of the Ultimate Edition as I have not played Awakening yet and would like to replay the game anyway.

    Yes. Both "versions" of Dragon Age keep the save files DAO:A/DA2 will import in the same location.
