    Overview

Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku (loosely translated to "Dragon Ball Z Side Story: The Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans") is a sci-fi fantasy RPG developed by TOSE and published by Bandai for the Famicom exclusively in Japan on August 6, 1993.

The sequel to Dragon Ball Z III: Ressen Jinzouningen, Dragon Ball Z Gaiden is the first video game based on the Dragon Ball manga and anime to follow an original story that was not derived from either source. Set sometime after the events of Dragon Ball Z III, the game follows the Z Warriors as they set off to find and destroy mysterious machines releasing large amounts of toxic gas, only to uncover a threat to Earth by a mysterious foe who harbors vengeance against the Saiyan race.

Other than the 2003 handheld game Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z Gaiden is the final RPG of the series to follow the card-based format, with later games using traditional RPG mechanics.

Alongside the game's release, it also received its own official animated adaptation of the same name, which was released in two VHS cassettes as a "visual walkthrough" to the game. This footage was later used for two 1994 "interactive movie" games of the same name: Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku - Chikyuu-Hen (following the first half of the story) and Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku - Uchuu-Hen (following the latter half). The animated version was later re-made as a bonus feature (titled Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans) for the 2010 game Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2).
