Item Container

Any object that holds health, ammo, equipment, money, etc. The container must be opened or destroyed in order to procure the items within.

Jump

It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto a building, a platform, or a skull, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.

Language Selection

Games with language selection allow the player to choose which language is displayed or spoken in the game.

PAX East 2019

The tenth annual PAX East took place March 28-31, 2019 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts. It was the second PAX East to span four days.

PAX West 2019

The sixteenth annual PAX West took place August 30-September 2, 2019 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington.

Polygonal 3D

Who needs 2D when we've got 3D? 3D, or 3 dimensions, is what we're used to seeing in almost every game these days, letting us do all sorts of awesome stuff like run in circles!

Questing

The act of taking on an in-game task; most often, these are provided to the player by an NPC. MMOs and RPGs are the primary users of this concept.

Red Sea Bream

Often translated (incorrectly) from Japanese "Tai" to "Red Snapper." Lives on reefs, or ocean floors with a max depth of 200 m with habitats ranging from the South China Sea up to the Sea of Japan.

Screen Splatter

Often found in either very violent games, or games taking place in or around water, Screen Splatter is a visual representation of blood, water, strawberry jam, or other liquids temporarily obscuring the player's field of vision.

Seahorse

Small marine fish that have a horselike head and swim in upright position.

Sequel

A sequel (also called a follow-up) is a game that carries forward the gameplay concepts, and often the story, of a previous game to which it is officially linked.

Sex Change

This applies to games where characters physically change from one sex to another. This ranges from a character being able to change sex as part of the gameplay (perhaps specifically of the opponents) to being limited to the story or character customisation between the sexes being permitted after starting a campaign.

Sheep

Those creatures that go 'baa' and grow wool on their backs.

Skeletons

The skeleton is the framework of the human body.

Sleeping

Whether it's to restore your health, save your game, just for the hell of it, or all of the above, sleeping in games has numerous uses.

Slime

Slimes are a common "starter enemy" in RPGs, and serve as a mascot for the Dragon Quest series.

Smithing

Smithing is a trade skill used to craft and shape metal. Steel, iron, gold, silver, pewter, tin, copper, and other metals can be used to craft armor, blades, guns, coins, arrowheads, locks, and a myriad of other objects.

Snow

Crunchy frozen water fallen from the sky. Many games feature a snow world, a snow level, or otherwise-connected regions of wintery landscapes.

Sprinting

A gameplay mechanic which allows the player to move faster than the normal speed. Usually for a set amount of time.

Sunflower

A popular yellow flower that resembles the sun

Taming

The use of behaviour-modifying techniques to render animals suitable to live alongside humans or be utilised by humans for work.

Wait Staff

Waking Up Captured

You're halfway through the game or more, everything's going great. You've got tons of weapons and crap and BAM! Flash grenade! You wake up later captured, off to either be executed, interrogated, etc. Often, you've lost all of your weapons as well. You sir, have just woken up captured.

Weather

Variable and dynamic simulation of weather conditions can be used to add variety, atmosphere (a rainy day in an RPG) and/or challenge (rain on the racetrack in a driving game) to a game.

Xbox Game Pass

A subscription service from Microsoft on Xbox platforms and Windows 10. Described as "Netflix for video games", users pay a monthly fee to gain access to a range of titles or buy to own them at a discount price.
