    Hey everyone,

I have been looking for a good RPG for my N3DS and I wanted to wait for the Dragon Quest 8 remake that is coming out in January. I am around the end of Pokemon Sun and I wanted another Big JRPG to play pretty soon. I did not play any of the other Dragon Quest games but I have played other JRPGs.

So I was wondering how well DQ7 is holding up and if it is worth playing for someone who wants to get into this series for the first time.

So with no definitive answer on what I should do I decided to start with DQ7. People are saying that DQ8 is the superior game over all so I rather not play 8 then go back to 7 and see how much better 8 is gameplay wise to 7. I feel like I would appreciate the changes much more if I played an older entry to the series. Luckly no other games are on my radar to play for quite a while and I could use another long JRPG to play, it has been a while.

I'm playing it right now. It's a fantastic remaster.

You should probably just buy them both.

This close to the DQ8 re-release? I'd say avoid overdoing it on Dragon Quest and play a different JRPG. I've been playing SMT IV Apocalypse and that's been pretty great.

@justin258: If i get DQ7 now I would not playing 8 right when it releases. I am just wondering if 7 was good enough that I should just play that then do 8 later in the year or if I should just wait for 8.

    Oh. Sorry, I misread.

I don't have any advice on that front as, like you, I haven't ever played a DQ game. I'm personally going to wait for DQ8, however, because that's the one that gets all the praise (also, because I already have too many 2016 JRPG's on my plate right now. I'm glad I can say that).

I've been looking for a jumping on point in this series for a while and I've seen people say 4 and 8 are really good starting points, but have no idea really. I'm trying to finish SMT4 and then apocalypse first anyway so it works better for me to wait for 8 but I guess it depends how antsy you are.

I really enjoyed 8 way back when. 7, meanwhile, has only interested me in fits and starts. The story is just kind of okay, despite the writing being pretty great (if that makes sense), and I am just not wild about the disjointed gameplay design, despite it being pretty interesting.

I guess the short version is, I would wait. These games are all grind heavy so if that is at all a concern, I would wait for what I think is the superior game in 8. If you can grind away without getting burned out, I would say just get both. In the end, I probably wasn't much help I guess!

Got DQ 7 3DS when it came out and it was great. DQ 8 is my personal favorite. I say wait for 8, but that's just me. You should still play DQ 7 3DS.

The Dragon Quest 7 remake is really well done from both a graphical overhaul and re-pacing perspective. That said it is still quite slow from a modern JRPG perspective. I think the DQ7 remake is worth playing but I guess the question is have you played DQ8 before and want to dive into it again or have you not played both.

Because if the former is true I think DQ7 is worth diving into as a newly experienced DQ game but if it is the later then DQ8 is the better game and you might want to wait for DQ7 to go on one of the rare 3DS sales late next year.

I've just finished DQ 7 yesterday, and I finished DQ 8 when it was a new release back on the PS2.

Objectively, DQ 8 is the better game with more features, an item crafting system, a DBZ inspired super saiyan combat system (you must get the timbral of tension item!!!), and a more standard rpg adventure flow. There is lots more post-game content too, and the ending is really cool with a nice twist.

Now, DQ7 was also pretty good...but shows its age. It has a simple job system, a VERY predictable and specific flow of gameplay, and the ending wasn't very good. It was also extremely easy. I loved the character Ruff, though! Mervin, Maribel, and Aisha were meh.

Is the DQ 8 remake out yet? lol

I probably wouldn't start with VII as my first one. VIII is better for that. Though if you can find a copy of V, play that since that is in my opinion one of the greatest JRPGs ever made.

8 is fantastic. The 7 remake is kind of boring and was clearly done on a budget.

    Wait for 8.
