[This review is based on the Japanese PS4 version.]I picked up DQXI at a used game shop in Japan for about $25 USD in May 2018, a few months before its US release. I mostly bought the game out of curiosity and a desire to continue improving my Japanese. Biggest Surprise of 2018 0
I haven't played a Dragon Quest game since VIII, but this is easily the best JRPG I've played since then. While I'm not the biggest fan of modern JRPGs, the occasional one grabs me, and this game drew me in from the minute it began. The visuals immediately grabbed me, as did the simple but effective combat. The dialogue is cheesy but fun and well executed, and I actually find myself listening to the voice acting, something which is pretty rare for me in games these days. There's a serious nostal...

A Charming, Slightly Unsatisfying Adventure 0
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age seems like it's doing everything right on paper. The game is a return to the Japanese Role-Playing standards that made it so popular, which basically means that it revolves around telling a character-focused story while having players fight through countless battles using turn-based combat mechanics. The world in Dragon Quest XI is beautiful and, most of all, just as charming as the cast of characters you are going to meet throughout this 50-hour advent...
