     My Personal favorite Dragon Quest game would probably have to be V, followed by VIII. I really liked being able to recruit monsters (like in Dragon Quest Monsters) and have them fight with me.

    Dragon Quest VIII easily.  It's my favorite turn based RPG on PS2.

    I took a break from there, though, since that's my second most useful character and I needed to take a break from playing it.

    If Dragon Warrior Monsters counts, that one without question. As for the standard series: most likely III, followed closely by what I've played of VIII (which is roughly a measly 10 hours)

    I've only played VIII. That one was great though. I've heard the rest are good as well.

    Well, I was mostly interested in which of the main series people liked the most.

    I haven't played that many, but of the ones I have I'd rank them DQ5 > DQ4 > DQ8.  Then there is Rocket Slime which doesn't really count, although it is a good game.  I'm looking forward to DQ9 and DQ6 in the next year or two.
