Earlier this week, Capcom revealed that Dragon's Dogma is returning as a F2P MMO for PC and PlayStation 4.

It sounds like it's got a bit of a Monster Hunter/Phantasy Star Online design to it, where four players can gather in a lobby and venture forth, which isn't really my favorite thing about it.

While co-op multiplayer was one of the most requested features for a Dragon's Dogma sequel, I personally enjoyed Dragon's Dogma because of the ways it was different from other games, thanks to the pawn system and it's asynchronous multiplayer. The pawn system is still in place for Online, but now they serve to fill out empty slots in sessions, as well as crafters who will make consumables and other items for you, presumably on some sort of timer.

My worry is that exploration and discovery, which was such a great part of the original Dragon's Dogma, will get thrown out the window in order to homogenize the game to be another Monster Hunter clone.

At least the DMC-inspired action combat looks to still be intact, so that's always something.

According to Capcom UK, there's no plans to bring it West right at this moment.

Ok forget everything I've said about not wanting a cheap online version, I just want to play more Dragons Dogma!

I love that combat and armor variety and ughh just release it over here Capcom you idiots. Ask Sony to localize it since they're already so graciously allowing Street Fighter to happen! Scratch, fight, beg, whatever just give us more Dragons Dogma!

I will fist fight everyone at capcom if they don't bring this to the West somehow. That looks amazing.

microtransactions i can deal with, here's my issue with an MMO version of Dragon's Dogma: most gamers have no interest in designing a character that both fits in and stands out, so you end up with a lot of eyesores, or a lot of the same default option, messing up the game world.

In the original game i spent hours searching the rift for pawns that looked halfway decent, hours man, but at least i had the final word on who got to be in my game, and the results were worth it.

Looks cool, I'd love to have a chance to play some Dragon's Dogma with stupid people instead of stupid AI. It's status as a Free to Play game worries me slightly, in that I don't know what kind of balance a game like that might try to strike. Will it be endlessly grindy to incentivise you to pay? If not, will any of the purchases even be worthwhile? I'd rather have a normal, full priced game but if this is what we get, then let's hope for the best.

There may be aught of use here, after all.

I just want Dragon's Dogma 2. I don't want to deal with F2P bullshit. I don't want to deal with MMO bullshit. I don't want to play with anyone else. I just want a Dragon's Dogma that is bigger and better.

Ignoring the F2P issues I'm not sure how well an action mmo can play especially when they don't have a good technical record with this franchise. Also hoping exploration isn't utterly ruined by any of the mmo aspects that being said as long as it's not region/ip blocked this will probably get me to make a japanese psn account.

I don't know, people played and loved the hell out of Skyrim. I think unbeknownst to us, we've been playing offline-mmo's for years now. What separated older mmo's from regular rpg's were obviously the people, but also huge worlds and writing. Well todays rpg's have huge worlds, they have very similar quest types and there hasn't been anything terribly well written in ages - so ultimately I think we've kinda been playing mmo's for a while now, and hey, it ain't that bad I guess. Still would love to have some great writing again like in Fallout 2 or Planescape Torment.

You know? I might play this. But I'd still much rather have a straight up Dragon's Dogma 2.

Huh, so that's what happened to that series. I always find it werid when single player RPGs go online. MMO is a game mechanic, a delivery system, it shouldn't really be a genre. The codifying of any genre or mechanic can sometimes make it hard to try new things.

It kinda still looks like the same world? That would be a bummer, since I've played a lot of Dragons Dogma. Well, at least part of it could be new.

Though, I guess they might not release this outside of Japan. Capcom being bad about everything and all that.

Try as I might, I never tend to stay with MMO type games even if the mechanics of the game itself are ace. Something about the way the quests are usually designed and that I tend to prefer having RPG's be a solo affair all add to me dropping off them.

Still, more Dragons Dogma is never a bad thing, I'd rather it be a full fledged sequel but if it ever releases in the states I'll give it a shot. I should really go back and beat the first game huh?

I imagine it's closer to Phantasy Star Online, Destiny and Warframe than a true MMO where the amount of people around you at once is incredibly limited outside of the hub.

If I make a Japanese PSN for this, does anyone know if it would work? I'd be willing to fight through the language barrier to try a Dragon's Dogma that is more like Monster Hunter. I just wonder if after downloading it from the Japanese PSN store would I be able to play online using my existing UK PS+ account.

@bollard: I assume that if it has PSN integration, that you'll be able to play it on any PSN account, but you might need to be logged into your Japanese PSN account in order to access any sort of microtransaction packages that only exists on the Japanese PSN store.

The other scenario is that the game ends up having it's own account system, where you need to login after you've started up the game... You'd have to fudge through some Japanese to create an account for that too and you'd probably not be able to tie your creditcard to that, but I see no reason as to why you shouldn't be able to play that from your UK account either.

On one hand it is more Dogma. On the other hand they took the game in the wrong direction and listed to the multiplayer whiners. On another hand I am borrowing from someone else it is also getting a PC version. Okay fine I would buy it I admit it, Dragon's Dogma is like crack cocaine for me. Just release it stateside capcom, don't be dumb.

I actually think this is a way better fit for Dragon's Dogma. It was already had literal monster hunting in it and a pretty good class system. Almost everything about the original felt like it was meant to be co-op. I hope this is both good and comes to the west.

@darkbeatdk: I don't mind fighting some Japanese signup nonsense, as long as I don't have to pay for a second PS+ account.

I think the franchise staying alive and going forward in any form is a victory for me. And I do think it's interesting in a lot of ways, but the best part of Dragon's Dogma is the combat so that still being in any game is a good thing.

New trailer... and it looks good!

    Loading Video...

Only think I can't quite tell: so is the real climbing still in? They show you jumping on enemies and stuff but I'm not sure if it has the deliberate grabbing like the first game (I hope it does). That class that has the grappling hook type thing going on looks really fun.

EDIT: I watched the second trailer and that shows you climbing on enemies just like the first game. This looks great to me. Looks like it has a fair amount of story too. We will see if it's any good.

Oh my fuck, this looks amazing. I want it. I want it all.

Look at those goddamn textures! That lack of letterboxing! That framerate! Is that 8 players or 4 players with 4 pawns? Either way, this seems like what Dragon's Dogma should've been from the start. So fucking hype.

I still gotta get through Dark Arisen. I better get on that before this thing comes out and I can't go back.

The closer this game feels to Dragons Dogma single player the happier I will be, the less then feel like single player the more angry I will be.

The less the other players in my game are observable in my game the happier i will be, the more other players are seen, heard, or get in my FUCKING WAY then less happy I will be.

I am willing to give Capcom a chance, after all I would have thought the Pawn system of the first game that pulled in characters from other games would be stupid...but it was cool and really great. I will give them a chance, but they have to make it work and not annoy me with other people's nonsense. I hate MMORPGs. I think the past 15 years of MMO games has been a huge stupid mindless mistake about pushing shitty gameplay and shitty social experinces into RPGs.
