I have seen a Sega Dreamcast on Ebay and am thinking of buying one, how do the games hold up today?
Also, how much would a brand new one be? I have seen it for $300 (AUD) but I have a feeling I am being ripped off.
Thanks! ^__^

The Dreamcast is the fifth and final console developed by Sega and the first of the sixth-generation of consoles to release. As the first 128-bit system, it was the first to offer truly arcade-quality 3D graphics. It is famous for being the first console to include worldwide online capability, its game library, and its unexpectedly short life span.
Should I buy a Sega Dreamcast?
" like the answer to all "should i buy a console questions", you should buy the console if it has a handful of games that you have interest in. "There are some, but how do they play today?
There used to be surplus Dreamcasts up until 3 years ago for $99 and I didn't buy it then, I sure as hell would not buy one now. Especially if its used, it probably doesn't work.
Edit: If you wait a couple months the PSN is going to have Dreamcast games for sale. Starting with Crazy Taxi and Sonic: Adventure.
" YES GET IT! In fact, I will make a list just for you tomorrow of all the reasons why you should get a Dreamcast. "Should I get the new one for a FUCKING HUGE $300? :P
" @Ace829 said:NO! There should still be some used ones going for $50-100. Get those instead." YES GET IT! In fact, I will make a list just for you tomorrow of all the reasons why you should get a Dreamcast. "Should I get the new one for a FUCKING HUGE $300? :P "

" @NekuSakuraba: Trust me. I love the Dreamcast and all, but it is not worth $300. I think there are new ones selling for $150. If you want to go new, look for those. I'll find links for you after I beat this insomnia and wake up tomorrow. "Really? Thanks! ^__^
No!
to $300 dollar Dreamcasts!!!
Yes!
to spending about $50 dollars for a used one!
Get one. You really can't lose.
After a quick search, I found this, which is new and cheaper =/
" Weren't you asking about the PS2 last night? "Nope, I have had a PS2 since launch! That is why my DP is Sora! ^__^

" @NekuSakuraba said:Dreamcast emulators require a pretty beefy CPU still so its not a great option. Also most of the best games on the Dreamcast are arcade-perfect ports of SNK and Capcom games, so if you really want to go the illegal emulation route you might as well just use mame, 2df, or ggpo for those." I've seen new ones going for $75-$100 US.
I'd love to buy one but I don't have the money to throw down right now.
No, Dreamcast games are going up on online stores.
PSN for sure, don't know about XBLA or WiiWare though.
" After a quick search, I found this, which is new and cheaper =/ "Listen to this man. He found a good one right here.
If you're a bit wary of Ebay though. Here is a nice list of retailers that are selling for cheap. However, since there is no Amazon AU, the shipping cost may be higher, but it should still cost you less than $100. I'll make the list, although it will take me a while. I should have it done by tonight.
Yes, but some of them are coming out on PSN." Well are there games you want to play for it? "

Also, how rare is Shenmue?
I picked up a Dreamcast about a year ago for £30, with a couple of games & controller. Works like a charm, and despite the controllers being the size of a dinner plate, they are awesomely fun machines :)
" @NekuSakuraba: Probably the PAL is your best bet. Also Shenmue isn't rare, but it's expensive as hell. I was lucky to find a new copy this year for only $30. Plus I'm not sure the gameplay holds up to whatever standards you have. If you want it for the story though then it's a decent purchase. "What games still do hold up to standards?
Bumping this, can someone assist in finding a new Pal or NTSC version? Also, is there a way to play games from other regions? And why the he'll is Shenmue 2 so much money. -__-
Search collecters sites/blogs for specifics and see what they have for sale?
Or if you have a market or rackety all shop in your town, go there and have a snoop around. There could be one amongst the junk.
Y'know, like in the films.
If you decide to get one, just go to a pawn shop and pick up a couple. They should only run you $25-30.. and use the least squeaky one. Return the other, or keep it for a backup. If nothing else you can use the Dreamcast to play NES backups as well, if you don't feel like dusting off the old console.
