As much as I've been digging on this game I'm late in the game and theres now a entire level underwater. I don't care what game it is... water levels always sucks no matter how good the rest of the game.

Duke Nukem Forever
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Jun 14, 2011
After approximately fourteen years of development, the heavily infamous sequel to Duke Nukem 3D was finally released, in which the macho Duke must damper yet another alien invasion.
A whole underwater level Gearbox? *sigh*
As much as I've been digging on this game I'm late in the game and theres now a entire level underwater. I don't care what game it is... water levels always sucks no matter how good the rest of the game.Gearbox finished the game by polishing it up and making sure it wasn't an utterly broken mess at launch. They had no input on the design decisions or the level design.

That level was already made by 3D Realms when Gearbox got hold of it.
How good the rest of the game is? You sure that you are playing Duke? The entire game is garbage. SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content.
@SuperSambo: Yeah, funny that that some people can enjoy something other people don't. =\But there is nothing redeeming. The shooting is substandard, the jokes arnt funny (if yout think they are there is something wrong with you) and it is filled with repetition.
Or do you slapping boob walls?

Must he really answer your pointless questions? The guy liked the game, and yes some of the jokes are funny if you stop pretending to be more mature than you are. Granted, most of the jokes are lame, but then again half of entertainment today is. People are just hating on Duke because they waited to long and instead of being the nostalgic teenager who would have enjoyed this, they are a cynical adult who wishes to just bash everything and everyone in the world with their nonsense.
Whoa, where did that come from.

@DemoskinosFull Disclosure: I'm a complete Duke Nukem fanboy. While other kids on my block were gushing over Ocarina of Time (and I was too, later), I was neck deep in level editing for Duke Nukem 3D. That aside.@SuperSambo: Yeah, funny that that some people can enjoy something other people don't. =\But there is nothing redeeming. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the shooting in DNF. Nothing. It functions like a shooter. It shoots like a shooter. It has ammo for guns which are essential to shooters. I honestly don't know where this argument is coming from, or did people forget how to circle strafe in the last six years or so?
Also, there's nothing wrong with the humour in the game, provided you're willing to indulge your inner caveman. Yes it's low brow and entirely crude, raunchy, and perverted, but sometimes that's okay. If it's not your bag, say so. Don't make gross assumptions on others.

A: This wasn't Gearbox, it was 3D Realms. Gearbox was merely finishing the fight.
B: That section is like 20 minutes max.
As much as I've been digging on this game I'm late in the game and theres now a entire level underwater. I don't care what game it is... water levels always sucks no matter how good the rest of the game.Yeah, like everyone else already said, you can't really blame Gearbox. They got the game from 3DR and could only do so much unless they wanted to spend another two years on it, which I can't imagine anyone was willing to do with that game at that point.
Gearbox's first real Duke game (Duke Begins?) is likely to be a far, far better game than this cluster was.

The jokes aren't great, and some of it is sad, but it's not Postal bad. As to the shooting, it wouldn't be so bad if there were more enemies to shoot. More than anything, I couldn't understand why this game was so... Empty. If the game were better populated, it would likely have been better.

Hey man, the water level in World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck was dope as hell.
Yeah, the underwater sections were total shit, especially the boss fight that takes place there. By far the most unfun and frustrating part of the game for me. I imagine they'll be easier on my next play-through, but I still didn't enjoy one minute of that crap. Luckily you don't spend that much time underwater.

The fact that your 19 answers all my questions. I played Duke 3D when I was 14/15 yrs old. It was my first FPS game that really captured me. So I have some love for Duke. Secondly, I grow tired of the direction shooters are going in its either space marines or army guys.... thats about the diversity in shooters these days.
And don't get me wrong, I love Halo, Call of Duty etc... but I wouldn't mind dumb stupid fun FPS games to come back into style. Loved and bought Bulletstorm and was eager to play DNF in the same regard.

Oh come on. I'm older than you. I also played Duke Nukem 3D when it came out and loved it, along with other Build Engine games like Shadow Warrior and Tek War (the latter being fucking awful but then it was Tek War). This is a shit game and no amount of nostalgia changes that fact. Everything that DNF does aside from vehicle levels and wankeractivity Serious Sam has done better.

There was a Tek War game? That's awful..

Yes. It was not good. Like the fiction.
I don't care how lacking DNF is in some areas the simple fact that its not like the majority of FPS games that I've played in recent years makes it a instant classic to me albeit one with glaring flaws. Nobody not even the people who enjoy the game are trying to hide the fact that the game is flawed in many respects that doesn't mean just because game X,Y and Z did something better than Duke doesn't make me like the game less.
DNF = Fun to me. I know its flawed I know there are games that do many of the things DNF tries better that still doesn't make me like it any less.

The shooting is great and fun. I don't see why people don't like the shooting.
@MooseyMcMan: My thoughts exactly. I kinda feel bad for them that they were handed what was basically a broken up mess and told to clean it up. And now folks will blame them because it's their name on the cover. *sighs*They still released it, they didn't improve it to make it better, they didn't cut it.
How is it in any way not their fault?

The goal was to keep as much of 3D Realms's original concept in tact as possible. Gearbox wasn't going in with the mentality of changing anything.

The other half is the fact that I'm simply TIRED of the route FPS games are developing. I wanna see MORE mindless shooters like Bulletstorm and DNF on the market. Everyone right now is just trying to copy Call of Duty and Halo and its goddamned BORING. Play Serious Sam and get back to me. At least when they remade those games with the new engine they didn't have the cheek to charge 70 bucks for the experience and each one of those games has more going for it than Duke Nukem Forever.

Gearbox did XBOX and PS3 submission. Triptych did everything else. Gearbox essentially got involved to make money and to please their 2k overlords.

I could understand people liking this game more then I could understand people liking Deadly Premonition. People have different tastes. As the old cliche goes, one persons trash is anothers treasure.

Explain how DNF's tiny levels with tiny groups of enemies per 'room' is better. Explain how DNF's complete lack of co-op is better. See, I think you haven't played Serious Sam at all.

Yeah he says, right before entering the water, that it's going to mess up his hair, making him sound like a huge pussy. There's a bug where if you dive quick enough, he says the line normally underwater.
That level sucked ass and is one of the prime reasons why I've already sold the game

Whether you agree it was a worthwhile goal or not, that's what they chose to do in order to maintain what 3D Realms had intended the game to be.

No really, I do. Duke Nukem Forever's measure of quality doesn't relate to who likes it and who doesn't. It looks awfully dated, has exceedingly limited combat and excessive load times on consoles. It's not a good game by any means. It certainly may have some appeal from a nostalgia standpoint or for curiosity's sake, but it really is a shit game, especially in light of its 14 year development cycle and its price. Had it, like the Serious Sam reboots, been sold at a budget price I wouldn't be so harsh on it but as Gearbox decided to sell it as a full priced product it must be compared with equivalently priced products and, as such, it just doesn't compare on any level.

Have you actually played any of it, or are you calling it shit simply because that's the popular opinion in the press? I've played the first few hours of the game, and it's not the clusterfuck of a shit sandwich that some reviews have painted it as. It is not a disaster; Superman on the Nintendo 64 was a disaster. It was a nearly unplayable mess. Duke Nukem Forever far exceeds the low bar set by the likes of such games and, even if it isn't your thing specifically, I can understand how some would enjoy playing it.
