because everyone in the game thinks he's great after 12 years of nothing, and the game is constantly telling you how awesome he is instead of showing you that he's awesome.

i mean when you look at video games, games like GTA, leisure suit larry, well tons of ganster games with strip clubs. all these games potray women as sex objects yet no big whoopla! about that really. But this game got shat on due to the same sort of humor... whats the deal? I think it has to do with the FPS market. Its became so big and excepted it was not unusual finding a 10 year old boy playing a FPS like call of duty in front of his mom for hours. Whats the big deal? lol get it? they became so desensitized over time fing WAR is more acceptable than a dirty joke... crazy world we live in friends, where a boob joke can ruin a game, even if its all about shooting stuff and blowing things up.

Duke Nukem is exactly what he always was. It's just hard for some people to take dated toilet humor in Dolby Surround Sound and Excruciatingly vivid HD Graphics, that's all.

Something like Viz or South Park is full of swearing, puerile humour, stereotypes, boobs and cocks (in the case of Viz) and loads of shit. I mean, Viz has a strip every issue to do with someone not being able to find a place to have a shit, or accidentally shitting on other people, or something along those lines. It's funny because it hits the right note - gleefully silly and childish, only offending our prurience.
 
Duke's abduction scenes, on the other hand, are far too close to real rape fantasies -  they emphasise powerlessnes of the women, which is something rapists really get off on. There's a huge difference between something that's offensive because it plays on our social uptightness about bodily functions and something that's offensive because it seems to stem from a genuine contempt for women (or gay people, or black people, or people with disabilities - take your pick).

When people refer to the dated humour they mean the dated references to things, the repeating of movie quotes from things long fallen out of favour. And also you can't get away riffing on other franchises if your game is poorly made, it sours the attitude. But these concepts seem a little beyond you.

Mortal Kombat was an 8. (Metacritic)

I don't see Duke in the same league as Crysis 2 or MK. A 5 is what Duke got on Metacritic and I think that is a fair score.

Duke should have been sold at $19.99 like the serious sam hd remakes and put it on sale for $10 soon after. Selling this at $60 has arguably done extreme damage to the franchise. I would not want to be the company bank rolling a sequel to this game but this is only my opinion. There might be plenty of ppl who'd pay big bucks for a decent Duke game...but I sure don't.

I think you are confusing unpopular to shitty game, duke the character is far from unpopular, it could be debatable but duke is an iconic video game character and loved by alot of people, sure.. he is unoriginal and one dimensional but who doesn't like duke as a character? the game on the other hand is 10 years too late, the style of humor it goes for we the people just don't care about anymore, our sense of humor for the most part has evolved.

They(gearbox) should of pushed it to 2012 and tried to make it relevant, or (gasp) finished polishing it while creating a whole new duke nukem game that could (if possible) be relevant, a more gritty modern day duke and just bundled this with it, sure.. it would of been a 2-3 year development time but we already waited what? 13 years? i think if gearbox would of took the extra year or released this for 29.99 it would of been perceived a little differently, for a 20-30 dollar game i think its pretty good, for a 60 dollar game it's on rogue warrior level, sure.. the game wasn't amazing but anyone expecting anything other then a 5-6/10 game was stuck in the past, the duke games were never really THAT good, it's like a B-horror movie, it's stupid fun but nothing amazing.

Personally, I hate the price point as much as the base, crass, sophomoric humor. Demanding $60 for this game is a goddamn insult and an anomaly of economics. At half the price, it's a kitschy trinket and time capsule novelty.
