Turns out practice does not make perfect 2

Duke Nukem Forever is quite possibly the best example of game design evolution ever conceived. From the antiquated character design and minimal plot to the inconsistent pacing and repetitive gameplay, Duke feels old. I would like to say It's a product of its time, but I can't be sure when that time was.The story of DNF takes place 12 years after the events of Duke 3D. Aliens are back to steal babes, President doesn't like you, Army General does. Go. Along the way you'll also run into Dylan, you k...

Forever in the making, but still not sure of its identity 0

A few years ago Duke Nukem Forever was dead. Sent to the doldrums of many a cancelled game, destined to never see the light of day. And yet here we are; the year is 2011 and Duke Nukem Forever is actually a finished game – a physical item you can sit down and play yourself. It’s quite a surreal experience considering the twelve year development hell that became the gaming industry’s longest running joke. It had gone through multiple iterations before Gearbox picked it up and set about finishing ...

    A sloppy game 0

The shooting is super boring.Duke Nukem Forever is totally out of place with modern games. The game is stuck in the past were first-person platforming and interacting with sinks are major gameplay mechanics. Duke Nukem Forever delivers tropes of games past and makes a poor attempt in crafting a modern game in virtually every way. Duke does, however, carry two guns and has regenerating health. Those are the only aspects of the game keeping me from believing the development team haven’t played a s...

Duke is Back, and He's Gotten Old 3

I'm sure there's a joke about size not mattering I'm missing here. Duke Nukem Forever is finally out. That is a statement that most gamers thought they would never hear. After being stuck in development limbo for 14 years, becoming a running joke in the gaming world, and even being cancelled at one point, the long awaited sequel to Duke Nukem 3D is available on store shelves thanks to Gearbox Software picking up the reins from former developer 3D Relams. Unfortunately, the tale of the game’s bi...

    Well, it's a game. 1

Duke Nukem Forever excels at one specific thing: Making the act of alien genocide fun as hell. All of the weapons have a great feel to them, and even the starting pistol packs a punch. Unfortunately, Duke Nukem Forever really wants you to do things other than shoot aliens, and that's it's biggest downfall.  12 years after the events of Duke Nukem 3D, Duke is now a mega-celebrity. Girls want him, guys want to be him. About 5 minutes after pressing start, aliens invade earth, steal our chicks, and...

    Flawed, But Fascinating 1

(Please note that this review only covers the single player component of the game)Gearbox’s President and CEO, Randy Pitchford, once referred to Duke Nukem Forever as “The Unshippable Game.” As I was playing DNF 14 years after it began development, I had similar feelings about its reviewability. Played out of context, it is a mediocre game with occasional highs and lows. The graphics are poor, the shooting doesn’t feel great and much of the humour falls flat. And yet, with the games bizarre hist...

    Honestly Guys 2

Personally, I do believe that this game delivers exactly what it promises, a Duke Nukem game. Gearbox and 2k never made any real use of the hype machine other than saying, 'Yes, it's finally coming out.' Is it ground breaking? No. Is it the best shooter, or even a contender? Not at all. Is it an enjoyable game to play? I feel it is. The game itself is nothing special, and isn't all that much different from Duke 3D, but it has fun factor. That's what counts. Personally, I haven't experienced any ...

After 14 years, the Duke finally returns. Is that a good thing? 3

No. No its not. I just finished it on PC, the version with fast loadtimes. The game is not so terrible that its good, its just a mediocre tedious piece of software. All I can really say about it, positively, its that the shooting works and some few environments do not feels as contrived as a corridor shooter a la Call of Duty. Still, most of the jokes fall flat, the environments are boring, the enemies are no fun to fight and the pacing is a drag. The only reason you can say this is a good game ...

The sad ending to a long-running joke. 4

Just not thrilling. That's really the most one can say about this game, a 12+ year mess of development hubris.  Considering there are likely people who were way too young to play Duke Nukem 3D who are old enough to play Forever, I would suggest first playing that classic game, if only to see what the hell the fuss was about.  Now that everyone is up to speed, let's continue.  The first thing that one notices almost immediately is that, despite being an Unre...

No Review Will Ever Explain This Game 0

There's the very occasional game that defies conventional review. A lot of the time, this goes for games with highly unusual gameplay or something so out there that traditional review criteria aren't going to cut it. Given 'the King' and his troubled development history, this is going to be one of those games.  The gameplay doesn't feel like any first person shooter in recent memory. Yes, there's the standard gun shenanigans and melee attacks, but some relics from an era kept only alive by the U...

Duke Nukem ran out of gum. 0

After years of thinking this game wasn't going to come out, if finally hit. This is the real sequel to the original Duke Nukem 3D, a terrific example of how great old school shooters really were. Sure, we had several console games, such as Duke Nukem: Zero Hour and Duke Nukem: Planet of the Babes, but this is the Duke Nukem the gaming community has waited for. The question is, does it make you hail to the king, or should Gearbox blow it out their... well, you get the point. Before we ...

    Brand New...Yet Old 0

I'll avoid the usual list of things that have happened since Duke Nukem Forever was announced (OK, just for giggles, I'll remind people that President Clinton got impeached since the game was announced, to give an idea how long this has been in developmental hell). Gearbox decided to pick up the pieces from whatever the heck 3D Realms was doing besides releasing games or finishing this repeatedly-rebuilt-from-scratch game of infamy. And the game will likely sell pretty well simply because it is ...

The only reason I didn't give it a 1 star is because I'm a Duke fan boy. The bugs are crazy but not game breaking... sadly. It looks so bad. Like most people... I'm holding out hope for a better Duke game. If you missed this one... try to keep it that way.Pros - You get to play Duke freaking Nukem again!Cons - The game... its all a con... all of it......

No longer the King, Duke returns 0

How long has it been? Well, 2 generations of consoles, we finished the fight(or so we thought), we traveled throughout the Fallout wastelands of Washington D.C., and New Vegas, Call of Duty and World of Warcraft has helped expand psychiatric wards, and Zelda is in 3D without glasses, but don’t look now Duke Nukem has returned. It’s been 12 long years since Duke Nukem Forever was first announced. Its numerous delays, rumors, and constant question of when has made release dates a yearly gaming co...

If you haven't been following the game industry for the past 5-10 years, these words will appear meaningless:Duke Nukem Forever has been released. Those of us who, at least tangentially, have kept up with the whole debacle, and perhaps have pulled out a ”When it's done!”-reference over the years, might have some problem processing those words. Finally, after 14 long years of development, the longest-running joke in the game industry has finally come out. Duke Nukem Forever has been one of the most anticipated games in the history of video games. No matter what angle you look at it, whether you hate Duke or Hail To The King every time you replay the original Duke Nukem 3D, the release marks a moment in gaming history. So does the game live up to it's promise? Or does it fall at the first hurdle? Presentation: 8.0/10 The present...

    Small Victories 0

Duke Nukem Forever is a real product that can be purchased from store shelves. In a way, that seems like enough of a victory for the troubled shooter. The sad, but perhaps inevitable reality is that existence is one of the game's few triumphs. Everything contained within the package that is DNF can best be described as broken, boring, or bland; it's a relic from the 90s that, if anything, just goes to show how far the games industry has come since The Duke's heyday. The game gets off to a compara...

This complete mess of a game is not worth any money out of your pocket. Slap your wrist in you even try to buy this game! Duke Nukem Forever is a bland, boring and all-around ugly shooter 0

Apparently, this is what we have spent the last decade and a half waiting for, a shooter so boring and ugly it makes you wonder why you even cared about the Duke Nukem series to begin with. Because while Duke Nukem Forever's brethren were tongue-in-cheek run and gun shooters starring one of the most wonderfully obnoxious and iconic protagonists in the genres history--this long, long awaited sequel is nothing short of a mess that isn't worthy of anyones time and money, and any expe...

Duke Nukem Forever Single-Player Review 0

Duke Nukem Forever—a game that, for many years, had been a videogame industry joke for constantly promising its release, but never actually coming out… for 15 years.   First revealed in 1997, DNF was a highly anticipated title after Duke’s last, widely successful appearance in Duke Nukem 3D in 1996.   Over the course of the 14 years from its announcement to its eventual release, 3D Realms (the studio that created the Duke Nukem franchise) teased gamers with a slow (very, very slow) stream of inf...

Forever Probably Should Have Stayed Forever. 0

I will be upfront and say that I did not hate Duke Nukem Forever, nor do I have the sick passion for hating this game as much as everyone else seems to.  However, with that being said, Duke Nukem Forever really isn't that great of a game to begin with.    To be honest, I got sucked into the nostalgia when I started this game.  I will admit that I've pretty harshly defended this game on giant bomb here, and I did cause quite a stir with my blog about how Duke isn't as bad as everyone thinks, and ...

Duke Nukem Forever Review: Fail to the King Baby 0

After 14 years in development and becoming a long running joke, Duke Nukem Forever has actually released and is on store shelves. Its been a long time since 1997, so how has the icon of shooting games that was Duke transitioned into the modern scene? Sadly the answer is horribly.  This should have been a fun fight The story of Duke Nukem Forever is simple: the aliens Duke defeated years before are back under suspicious circumstances, and it quickly becomes apparent that they want our women. Where to start ?It was meant to be the game we were waiting for, the game we deserved. Duke was to return and triumphantly reclaim his throne as the king of games.Well let’s not jump the gun on that one. After a long 12 year wait for the much anticipated and hyped sequel the game lacks in a lot of aspects you would except such an epic development to provide. The game would look at home amongst many of your favourite PS2 games with it’s low budget graphics and clunky controls it would be a miss ev...

    Never bet on Duke 0

The long awaited Duke Nukem Forever has finally arrived, and has certainly been a rather polarizing game. It has garnered poor critical reception almost universally (with a few exceptions), but has a strong, vocal following of fans who claim that it is a fun, “just run around and shoot guys” sort of experience. Now, I hate to be blunt, but anyone who enjoyed this game has no standards or taste whatsoever. Duke Nukem Forever is a horrid game. It isn’t funny, it isn’t oldschool, it controls poorly...

I can't endorse the, "Always."Duke Nukem Forever is okay. I don't think it deserves the apoplectic hate its receiving from -- well, pretty much everybody that's played it -- but I'm not so forgiving as to flat out call it great. Occasionally fun and funny, is the best I can say about it.You heard me right, funny. This is the moment that I thought would never come. I must admit, I was quite skeptical that this game would ever show up - even as I put the disc in my 360, I couldn't believe that this was actually the Duke Nukem Forever that I was promised nearly 15 years ago. Regardless of your interest in DNF, or even regardless what you think of the game, the fact that it's actually been completed is an amazing achievement, and everyone at Gearbox should be proud of what they've achieved. Yet despite this,...

Since I was six years-old, Duke Nukem Forever has been in the works in some way or another. Now, after what seemed like forever (Huh? Yeah? You like what I did there? If you were to use the words "bitchin'" and "bodacious" in front of me, I would recommend that you be institutionalized. Let me start off by saying that this is one of those games that had been in development for so long that no one was quite sure what would happen. This game also went into a momentary state of being thought dead as 3d Realms ran out of money. It was through the brave move of Gearbox that this game came into being. In this game you will be playing the part of Duke Nukem, your super badass, monster ass kicking, roid raging hero stuck in the nineties. To be fair though this game should have come out ...

Duke Nukem Forever is out, the reviews are in and the game — failed. Miserably. The game is certainly playable, though it plays like a game made seven or eight years ago, even looking so in 2011. After playing through this messy frat-boy adventure, I came to the conclusion that “it will get better.” Duke is not dead, even  after a shoddy, ugly messy entry that should have been released years ago so that it could have possibly had a chance at shining on last generation consoles.        T...

While I was much more of an occasional gamer in 1996 I did play Duke Nukem 3D and remember it fondly.  Not long ago I played through the game using eDuke, a free engine source port that makes the game control and play at high resolutions and using modern control methods.  It's a great game with varied level design and a fun atmosphere, though it definitely suffers from some issues.  Jumping forward to Duke Nukem Forever I can say much the same thing... fun but flawed.Duke Nukem Forever does not ...

Duke is back at last, but is it a bad thing? 0

Duke Nukem 3D was a game that didn't really add anything new to the FPS genre, but it took what was out and made it super awesome. It took the gameplay of Quake and fused it with the puzzles of Doom, and spiced it up with a ton of humor. End result was a game that, to this very day, is regarded as one of the best fps games of all time and is still played by many today.   After the games success, developer 3D Realms started work on Duke Nukem Forever. Without telling the whole story, I'll brief i...

It's taken 14 years for it to come out, and anyone who thought it would be an amazing be-all-to-end-all was just fooling themselves. Its not unplayable by any sense of the term and Gearbox did an amazing job just getting it published. As the final product of over a decade of issues, developer closures, massive hype, and its a...

I suppose, given the fourteen years' worth of hype and anticipation, the writing was on the wall for 3D Realms' notorious sequel to Duke Nukem 3D. Yet Duke Nukem Forever has got boobs, unique weapons, dozens of pop culture references and a dirty sense of humour that keeps it afloat atleast for originality's sake.
