The shooting is super boring.Duke Nukem Forever is totally out of place with modern games. The game is stuck in the past were first-person platforming and interacting with sinks are major gameplay mechanics. Duke Nukem Forever excels at one specific thing: Making the act of alien genocide fun as hell. All of the weapons have a great feel to them, and even the starting pistol packs a punch. Personally, I do believe that this game delivers exactly what it promises, a Duke Nukem game. Gearbox and 2k never made any real use of the hype machine other than saying, 'Yes, it's finally coming out.' Is it ground breaking? No. Is it the best shooter, or even a contender? Not at all. No. No its not. I just finished it on PC, the version with fast loadtimes. The game is not so terrible that its good, its just a mediocre tedious piece of software. All I can really say about it, positively, its that the shooting works and some few environments do not feels as contrived as a corridor shooter a la Call of Duty. Just not thrilling. That's really the most one can say about this game, a 12+ year mess of development hubris. Considering there are likely people who were way too young to play Duke Nukem 3D who are old enough to play Forever, I would suggest first playing that classic game, if only to see what the hell the fuss was about. Duke Nukem Forever is a real product that can be purchased from store shelves. In a way, that seems like enough of a victory for the troubled shooter. Not long ago I played through the game using eDuke, a free engine source port that makes the game control and play at high resolutions and using modern control methods.
