This conference seems ripe for the "best thing ever or worst thing ever" internet problem that Vinny was just talking about a couple days ago. There are things I really liked (MGS V, Titanfall) and things I really didn't ($500, Ryse, LOTS of first person shooters). But already know these comments are going to be filled with "HORRIBLE MS IS DONE XBOX ONE IS A FLOP."

I think MS did what they needed to do. After the reveal, everyone asked "where is the games?" Well, here they are. Whether all those games are completely interesting, I'm not so sure. But I think there was plenty to like about what I saw.

YO MAN SOUNDS LIKE THE XBONE IS XBONED

But seriously this, there were plenty of games I want to play and some I have no interest in. Making it basically every gaming console ever.

As the level of parity across Microsoft and Sony's consoles increases, the launch price comparison only becomes more important.

$449 puts Sony in an okay spot, but under $400 would be a huge advantage....IF they can afford to do that.

No surprises and nothing really looked next-gen or gave you that "wtf!" reaction. Glad they showed games but most were multi-platform games that will sure run better on a PC or PS4. Below was the best thing they showed and they barely showed 10 seconds of it. :[

Seems a fair assesment. Nothing too revolutionary, but that is hard to judge from trailer. What we do know is that a good amount of the audience (me included) will wait till at least 2014 to get One

Yeah considering the TV stuff is going to be US only to start and I have no interest in the Kinect I'd have a hard time paying $500 for something I'll be using 60% of.

That said our opinions on this could change when Sony reveals their price.

This seems about right Alex. They definitely brought the games, but they spent a lot of time on the expected and boring and, with the exception of Titanfall, the exclusives didn't have much meat to them or were entirely uninteresting. Spark, Quantum Break, and the Insomniac game all were intriguing, but I have no idea what to think about them really.

Then the $500 gut punch. Not entirely unexpected, but combined with my negative view of Microsoft and Live over the last few years, my distrust of whether they really do "love indies," and my general disinterest in the focus of the console, and I'm still not even close to paying that much for XBONE. Titanfall can only do so much.

ETA: And the guy pausing for applause after announcing the price point was just plain hilarious.

That price plus the DRM on physical media puts the Xbox One squarely into the "do not purchase" category for me. If Sony has the same price and the same DRM restrictions, it looks like I'll be settling with a WiiU/PC combo this generation. I also wasn't too impressed with the general visuals...sure, there was some stuff that looked like it just barely couldn't be done on current gen consoles, but nothing that really screamed "the new generation is here!" In fairness, the PS4 will probably have the same problem there, games are just already too expensive to make on current gen hardware, let alone a step up.

I laugh at Microsoft's currency conversion skills. £429/$680 USD for the Xbox One?

A console which isn't going to have any of the TV stuff or sports stuff for a long time after the launch in the US or possibly ever with regards to the sports stuff. I can't see it being applied to the World Cup or other applicable sports outside of the US.

I like the games; I love the games. They rev my engine but not at that price.

    I think not.

Phantom Pain looks amazing, easily my favorite of the MS conference. There were some pretty solid exclusives shown and overall a lot of games that I want to play. 500 dollars is a bit steep though, so I definitely won't be there on day one. But man...sooner or later I'm going to need Dead Rising 3.

Not bad considering I was pretty much decided on a PS4 before the conference. I'll own both eventually but which one to get first is back to being a tough decision. Bring on the Sony conference!

Some of the exclusives seem cool, but not enough to buy the system. And I'm not going to feed into MS doubling down on shitty motion controlled gaming, so I'll either be going with PS4 or a PC.

$500 USD doesn't seem like a mass market price for a games console, but it does seem like a reasonable early adopter price. For reference, the 360 (w/20GB HDD) was released in 2005 for $399, or $476 in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Forza 5 might be enough to make me an early adopter, but I also want to see a game that makes a convincing case for the new Kinect camera (since it's no longer an optional accessory).

Lets say you were going to put together a living room PC with a $500.00 budget. Would it be comparable to the hardware capabilities that Microsoft is offering?

Probably somewhat comparable at launch, with the $500 PC being slightly worse performance wise.

But look at something like Halo 3 vs. Halo 4. As the console gets more and more development time and more optimized engines, it will blow the shit out of any current PC in the $500-800 dollar range. Obviously the PC has the ability to be upgraded, but that's the way it always works.

    The theme of the conference seemed to be; let's copy Sony;

    Let's give away games!

    LBP we got that!

    Insomniac they are with us!

    Journey? How about Master Chief!

I was kind of surprised by the amount of 3rd party exclusives they are getting, also the lack of Call of Duty seemed a bit crazy, they did cover it extensively in the last event, but not even a mention today was odd.

    Ryse looked really dumb.

Spark was interesting, but I can't see myself ever spending enough time with a game like that to get anything meaningful out of it.

The only thing that interested me as far as exclusives go was Quantum Break, and they haven't shown any game play footage yet so who knows.

The euro price always looks high as they include sales tax - US price doesn't. It will still average out $100 dearer but with import tax and exchange rates - this is expected.

As with this Xbox, I think I'll wait until the generation after this one to pick up a system. Doing the same so I can play it's exclusives and whatnot. Remedy's looks interesting, but not $499 interesting. Stickin with Sony this time round.

I think the conference did its job well. Games were there, personally they ranged from good to great for me. But that's going on trailers and a bit of gameplay. I don't know how they'll actually turn out but for me that's the expectation of early next-gen games.

Either way I don't think I'm gonna be buying a new console for a while. PS4 looks pretty great and I would say Xbox One looks solid bordering on good.

If they're going to force people online to watch ads on their home screen while still charging 60 dollars a year for XBox Live, a 500 dollar starting price is crazy.

It makes Sony's "599$" thing seem almost quaint, since you're going to be spending hundreds more than that in the long run with the Xbox One.

Don't we Europeans pretty much always pay more for stuff like this than Americans? Here in Norway it's supposed to cost 5000 NOK, which by today's exchange rate is 867.65 USD. Not cheap.

That said, I'll probably buy this thing at some point. But I never buy consoles at launch (earliest hardware often suck and has problems, launch games...ugh), so if you give me a year, I'll buy it. Same goes for the PS4, which I'm pretty sure will cost $449, and close to the same price as the Xbox One in Europe.

edit: As for the event? Eh, I'm not sure. Not many games interested me, and the multimedia stuff is kinda useless for me. But I'm sure I'll warm to it: It does seem quite expensive though, and if Sony somehow manages to keep their console to $399 they've got a HUGE advantage right out of the gate. Interesting times.

The PS3's original launch price was also €499 for the small HDD one and €599 for the big version. It somehow still "won" over here. I'm really not surprised or think 500 bucks is out of line. Hell, some of my less hardcore gamer friends expected the new consoles to be 700-800 Euro.

@alex: With State of Decay (already out), Disney Infinity, GTAV, Dark Souls 2 and Rayman Legends (and the potential of a late-in-the-lifecycle DC4 release?) on the horizon I'm starting to rethink my whole "done with the 360 thing".

I wonder if this "Ultra-slim" release is related at all to these feelings I've suddenly been having.

A lot of the best stuff they showed off weren't exclusives: MGS5, Titanfall (well, coming to PC & 360), Battlefield, some of those indie games likely will end up on Steam if not PSN. Does this mean GTA5 is at Sony tonight? Anyway, Halo is far off, Forza made no mention if things like custom paint jobs are returning, all they showed off was a mode in which you don't even play it. No Gears or Fable or Crackdown. Still don't care about waiting 2-4 weeks for COD or Battlefield maps. Weird conference.

Wrong. The Internet explodes because Microsoft, already in a bad spot image-wise, puts on a show with about 3 cool games in a sea of unoriginality, completely neglects to assuage people's misgivings re. the used games debacle, and somehow feels $499 is a justifiable price point.

    Bonkers.

Well, nothing of interest for me except for Titanfall. That looks great. But if it's on the PC I may just go in that direction. Looking forward to hear what Sony has in store.

    $500? That'd buy half a GTX Titan!

Great showing from MS for sure. Lots of great looking games ! Titan Assault looked fucking incredible as did Quantum Break (hope to see some in depth gameplay..) Forza and Ryse at launch ? nice. Also good to have confirmation of Witcher 3. Too much promising stuff overall.

The price does not really bother me. I was thinking it might be even more than it is. The pack in Kinect is given to take the price higher.. Sony might do the smart thing and not force the camera to everyone and in the process have cheaper console with more power.

MGS5 and Titanfall were the only good things shown and they aren't even exclusive. Capcom why have you ruined Dead Rising?
