For the first time since its inception in 1995, E3 missed a year. The industry event was cancelled by The Entertainment Software Association on March 11, 2020 due to "increased and overwhelming concerns about COVID-19 virus. The ESA stated it planned on contacting attendees and exhibitors concerning refunds for registration fees. They also announced an intention to potentially hold a coordinated online presentation in order to continue the tradition of having new game announcements at the show. Lastly, the ESA stated they intend on bringing a "reimagined" event for E3 2021.
