The Edge of the World is a major location in the 1998 LucasArts adventure game Grim Fandango. It is a coral-mining facility built on an island at the literal edge of the Sea of Lament in the Land of the Dead's Eighth Underworld. The mine's existence is not widely known due to the island's precipitous and remote location, as well as the rapid ocean currents surrounding the facility which often pull unwary vessels straight over the edge of the Sea of Lament to their dooms. The glowing coral mined here serves as a convenient light source in the Eighth Underworld, particularly in the neon-drenched metropolis of Nuevo Marrow.
According to Domino Hurley, the Edge's mining operation was originally designed to dig out the precious coral using a large mechanized scoop attached to a crane that moves along a fixed track. Once the coral within reach of the crane was depleted, Domino and crime boss Hector LeMans purchased the facility for a pittance from its previous owners. Utilizing underwater miners as slave labor has enabled Domino to extract more coral directly from the seafloor. Controlling the only known source of glowing coral allows Domino and Hector to sell the commodity at an exorbitant price, funneling additional cash into Hector's already-sizable coffers. Domino's workforce of slaves is mostly comprised of lost souls who had flung themselves overboard towards The Pearl, a mythical treasure at the bottom of the Sea of Lament that lures many souls into the depths with its hypnotizing glow. The Pearl is guarded by a monstrous octopus that scoops up anyone within reach and delivers them to the mines, where they are forced into slavery under Domino's supervision.
The remarkably-intact wreck of the SS Lamancha can also be found at the Edge of the World: it is dangling vertically over the edge by its anchor chain, which is hooked onto the underwater end of an ore conveyor belt. Manny later raises the ship from its resting spot to use as transport back to Puerto Zapato.
