Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Anthropomorphism is the concept of an object, concept or character that has human qualities or traits, such as speech, a level of intelligence similar or higher than a human's and self consciousness. "Anthro" means "of human" and related to the concept of humanity.
Levels that progress forward by themselves at a fixed rate.
Games that contain levels/missions/chapters where the player starts off in immediate danger.
Games that are depicted with a predominantly black-and-white appearance, with sequences to this effect, or optional color filters.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
A level that is focused entirely on a boss encounter.
A style of gameplay where players must navigate a vast stream of projectiles.
A point within the game whereby the game saves its current state whether it be for the purpose of a more convenient respawn point or a gameplay design (such as in racing).
Climbing is a common tradition in games, particularly platformers. There is often a particular type of surface that can be climbed, and it has a recognizably different look than other surfaces in the game. Climbing ladders or stairs doesn't count.
Collectibles are items such as coins, rings, gems, packages etc. that can be gathered, usually for some kind of reward, or sometimes to simply beat a level. Often (almost too often) the source of earning achievements and trophies on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Games that ask the player whether they are sure about the decision that they have just made.
Dancing is the movement of a body, usually rhythmic and to some kind of music. A lot of times, it happens between two people and may be romantic.
The concept of purchasing media and having it delivered over the internet. No physical representation of this content is given, and although the content resides on the user's hard drive they are typically granted a license to the product, rather than ownership of it.
A double jump is the ability to jump while already in mid-air to get some extra lift. In reality, double jumps are not possible and violate fundamental laws of physics.
Electronic music is one of the broadest classifications of music, and has been a staple of video game soundtracks since the 90s. The genre's main trait is the use of electronic instruments.
Frequently seen in RPGs and Fighting games, The EHI helps players calculate the current health of opponents.
To elude, escape, or get away from. Some games require players to escape from some people or things to perform some objective or avoid death.
A door that players must go through to exit the level
A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
It's not just for airplanes anymore: Game mascots and MMO players alike have taken to the skies. Players can use flight to quickly navigate large levels, find hidden items, or take opponents down.
The concept of a game referencing another game through mockery, parody or even directly. A game reference to the same franchise does not count.
A characteristic many game characters share when their eyes emit a colored light instead of what a regular eye should look like. This is often evident in robots and characters possessed by some evil force.
Gravity is a physical phenomenon, specifically the mutual attraction between all objects in the universe. In a gaming setting, gravity determines the relationship between the player and the "ground," preventing the player or game objects from flying off into space, and hopefully acting in a predictable/realistic manner.
The ground pound is a move where a person in midair somehow makes themselves strike the ground with more force than if they had merely landed. Popularly known as the "butt stomp" due to Super Mario 64's variant, which appeared as though Mario was attacking foes with his rear end.
Many games and most systems contain warnings such as "May Cause Seizures". This page will highlight that warning, and the games which have had a history health problems associated with them.
A digital storefront which donates some of its profits to charity.
The best way to make sure even the stupidest players know that certain people, places, terms, or concepts in a game are important is to highlight those words in the text with different coloured letters, or through the use of bold, italicized, or all-caps text.
A fourth-wall breaking situation in which a character tells the player to press a specific button or a reference to a button is shown within the environment. This mostly happens during tutorials.
“Indie” or “independently developed” games are video games which are developed by a studio without the support of an external publisher.
