In 2002, after a few years at Ion Storm, Pagliarulo contacted his friend Pete Hines, who used to work under him at the video game journalism website Adrenaline Vault and had since become Vice President of Marketing at Bethesda Softworks. He was immediately hired at Bethesda, with his first job working on the Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon expansion pack. He then became one of the lead quest designers on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, writing the Dark Brotherhood storyline.
Emil Pagliarulo was promoted to lead writer and a lead designer on Fallout 3, working closely with Todd Howard, who was the lead designer on the game. Fallout 3 went on to win Game of the Year and Best Writing at the 2009 Game Developers Choice Awards.
