Phew, I was worried that it would score lower than Medieval 2 with critics saying stuff like there's nothing new, a lot of things are still broken etc. It seems like Creative Assembly really went in and made it bigger and better. I'm totally getting this now.
Empire: Total War
Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Mar 03, 2009
The fifth installment in the Total War series from The Creative Assembly. Empire: Total War features the series' hallmark blend of real-time strategic battles, and turn-based empire building. Empire takes place during the 18th century — an age of imperial expansion, trade, rifles and cannons.
Empire Total War totally getting some good reception
I've played around 15 hours so far, completed the first mini campaign (RTI all chapters) and working my way through Grand campaign as the British.
Ship combat is kinda boring now, its like Sid Meiers "Pirates" kinda ... maybe I need more practise but for now I just auto resolve after 10 or so battles.
There is a LOT more to do in the campaigns but the land combat with guns instead of melee is boring. A lot of micro management and the controls to do this feel broken. No where near as good as the older TW games. Needs tweaking.
I played a game called Gettysberg? Sid Meier again^? Which is very similar and just as boring. Move units to range in a line, make them stand still as they auto fire sloooowly. Run some horses around the flanks and win.
Arranging your units in mass is very hard due to the terrain, you cant auto group more than 2 units at a time to form a good line, you need to micro and its so frustrating.
I see myself returning to Medieval 2 modded soon :(
"I'm still not sold on the game based on the horrific demo but I'll install the full game and see how that goes as well."Don't let the demo scare you. If you were referring to the load times... I've found the load times to be considerably less in the release. It might take my PC 15-20 seconds to load from campaign to battle. I can live with that.
"Thordain said:Well it was the loadtimes, the awful framerates, the crude camera controls, the ridiculously high graphical requirements to play this game well and the constant freezes. But hey, if the loadtimes are better I guess that makes it all worth it."I'm still not sold on the game based on the horrific demo but I'll install the full game and see how that goes as well."Don't let the demo scare you. I bought it and so far it preforms infinitely better than M2. The engine is actually better than Rome, instead of worse as M2s was. I'm on medium graphics, and they are not noticeably better than M2 in my opinion, and there is hardly any variation in the units, but the campaign is quite good. I just hope the game is suitable to mod. Seems there were some snags to modding the full game. Cross your fingers.

Aside from the camera controlling."Thordain said:Well it was the loadtimes, the awful framerates, the crude camera controls, the ridiculously high graphical requirements to play this game well and the constant freezes. "Thordain said:I actually have a pretty good rig. I have no trouble with games like Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander or Med 2. But even with the graphics at low the framerate was still abysmal."Rudy said:It sounds like more of a "your computer sucks" thing, rather than the actual game. I'm really surprised how well it's selling. Topped the UK charts for at least a week (first PC game that's done that since Football Manager back in 07), Steam users playing it seems high. I didn't like Medieval TW 1 or Rome TW, and I'm kind of surprised this game found as big of a player base as it has. Seems to be outselling Dawn of War 2 more than 3 to 1.

And this is coming from someone who is mainly a RPG and FPS fan. Two best strategy games in years i must say. Empire is more epic and what not, but Dawn Of War has that cool rpg feel to it, with lots of weapons and special moves to collect (along with a very good coop camapign with a friend).
Im always happy when a game surprises me like these two have.
