Gotta love the trolling they did when they announced Smash Melee. I'm also a bit disappointed that KOF got dropped, I'd rather have that in as a main tourney than Tekken 7. And that's because no one will have sufficient time to lab it up for that game. Even DOA would have been a better choice for a 3D fighter, but I understand that Tekken 7 was placed in the list because it had Namco's support.
But man... nine games for the main event! I'm not gonna get any sleep come EVO.
@nathanxplosion: You mean Melee? Hopefully. Competitive Melee is boring as hell to watch and takes forever.
Glad KI made it in, it's the hypest fighting game.
Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh, two Smash games? Well, looks like there's a lot of EVO I won't be watching this year. I would have preferred Last Round or UNIEL, but neither would bring in the numbers pretty much anything else on that list would bring in.
I look forward to watching Smash 4 and Marvel. Also what the hell is Melee doing over King of Fighters? Poor Latin America. :(
@l1ghtn1n: Yeah I meant Melee. I was just curious as someone who isn't interested in Smash as a spectator, if the community is embracing the new game.
I'm also disappointed that KoF 13 won't be a main stage game but I'm hoping someone runs a side tournament. If that happens there's a chance that the finales could end up on one of the streams.
@l1ghtn1n: yeah...as much as I love DOA, and it pains me to say this, I don't think that's going to change. The community the game attracts kinda completely fucks itself over when it comes to any chance of that game becoming more popular. I see people talk about the Last Round and coming to PC and whatnot and every fucking time, the conversation just turns into "CAN'T WAIT FOR NUDE MODS."

Competitive Melee needs to be like, 2 stock at the absolute most, with a fairly restrictive time limit. The way it was structured at EVO last year was fucking TERRIBLE. Also, while I think Melee is the classic Smash Bros. game to play with friends, you're right, it's boring to watch as a competitive game. There just aren't enough tournament viable characters, so the lack of variety just bores the hell out of me.
I wish Nintendo would take a page out of the Zangief book and make a large Smash Bros. character who is occasionally good. Just because the character is physically large doesn't mean that their move speed has to be slow, that their attack speed has to be slow, and that there has to be massive amounts of recovery frames on all their moves. Large characters having a large hitbox is already a pretty big drawback; it turns out you don't really need to nerf their speed in every conceivable way!
I mean, the community is there, so whatever, gotta go where the players are. But I sure as fuck don't intend to watch it.
@dudeglove: Both Smash games feel completely different to play. Like, even at a casual level, the differences in how the games feel are pretty huge. Melee deserves a spot because it is one of the most played fighting games even after all these years. I don't know what the numbers for Smash 4 are, but I would guess that there's some new game hype surrounding it and also Nintendo wants to push it. This isn't even the first time that we've had two games of the same series at a single EVO; EVO would often have two SF games in previous years.
@Nephrahim: MvC3 is still consistently the number 2 game at most tournaments so I expect it at Evo for a while longer.
Surprised Marvel made it another year... With the complete lack of support I'm counting the years until it's off EVO.
Are you serious? Marvel 3 isn't going anywhere until after Marvel 4 comes out. Hell Marvel 2 was at every Evo up until 2011, the year Marvel 3 came out.
@aetheldod: I believe some Evo TOs have also expressed that melee is too slow so there may be some changes.
@Nephrahim: Marvel is still the second-biggest scene at most tournaments out there. It's not about developer support (primarily), it's about community support.
The Tekken 7 announcement was so crazy, and since I plan to go this year, going 0-2 in that should be a blast.
Too bad Killer Instinct gets a bad rap for being the "rich man's fighting game." Iron Galaxy has made that game a lot easier to watch on screen since they took over (after EVO 2014), but it's already pretty much written off by most
KI and maybe SF4 is all i'll watch.
Melee is so slow and boring. MvC is quite boring now it's pretty much jumping around screen until the first character get hits then watch a 20 second 100% combo. The others i don't really know enough about the game to really get enjoyment out of watching.
KI is soo crazy and fun to watch, I don't play it, but when the announcer yells out counter breaker, oh man hype ensues.
- No KOF XIII which has been one of the most hype games for years
- 2 Smash games
I'm about ready to throw down the gauntlet.
It's lame that the only big games there are both from Capcom, all the others are relatively small communities and just not as hype to watch. I don't mind Killer Instinct but it isn't in the same league as USFIV as that game sees so much more competition & has bigger names increasing its hype levels. Having said that I find Marvel 3 very stale with all the Vergil, Zero, Doom users...
KI and MKX will be the ones I watch this year. Sad KOF is removed, watching people play high level Smash is insanely boring...
@l1ghtn1n: I forgot about Guilty Gear and I'm interesting in seeing it, Smash could not bore me more and Ultimax will have some decent matches I'm sure. I don't mind Tekken but I always found the combos in that game a little drab to watch but I'm certainly interested in playing 7. I'm not surprised Mortal Kombat X is there since it's new but I expect that to be boring to watch like MK9, maybe I'll be wrong but I didn't enjoy 9 at all outside of seeing fatalities for the first time.
I can see hype moments in most games (definitely not MK9, I dislike how that game flows) but Smash Bros is something where I look it at and don't get how people can take it seriously. You know how most games are boring to watch in low level play but can be really interesting at high level? Smash is the only game where it's the complete opposite.
I hope they decide to put KOF XIII in at a later date or run a side tournament, it just makes me all the more excited to see what KOF XIV brings at Evo 2016! (hopefully)
Pour one out for ya boi SNK:
I was lucky to find 10 people still playing BBCP when I went online recently. Maybe BlazBlue will have a brief spasm of hype again when BBCP Extend gets released in a few months (two whole new characters with some balance changes that everyone will bitch about at retail price, and no mention yet if Terumi and Kokonoe will be included to spite those who paid for them in the previous version, woohoo).
Having said that, the list is pretty much what I expected. Didn't know P4U2 was still that popular but I guess it was enough that it made the tourney. Looking forward to watching MKX to see if it's that much different from previous installments, and if people will get over being trolled by Harada for Tekken 7 (stream monsters probably won't).
I can't wait as I've made the decision to go this year. I'll most likely get bounced out in the first or second round, but damn it looks fun. MKX being such a new game I just have to figure a character out and hopefully get around 3 or 4 round.
RIP Injustice.
Nice to see KI return and the inauguration of Mortal Kombat X. Really seems silly to have two Smash titles, but that's not a unique opinion.
Persona and Guilty Gear??? Anime crowd has got to be happy.
2 smash games though... Melee takes way too long, but okay :/
I guess that lineup is less surprising if you look back at 2014. That was a crazy year for fighting games: P4AU, Guilty Gear Xrd, Smash, KI Season 2... Really bummed by seeing two iterations of Smash on the roster, but then again, EVO 2009 had Third Strike, HD Turbo, and SF4. Melee was just so incredibly boring to watch last year.
I really hope they change the rules for Smash this year. People were cheering against the underdog because they didn't want to see it drag on for another hour last year.
Yeah. I was definitely one of those people. It was straight up painful to watch, and now there are inexplicably two (TWO!?) Smash games in the lineup.
To be fair though, I honestly have no idea what competitive matches in the Wii U game look like so I'm willing to at least give it a small chance.
Tekken 7 and P4A aside, I'm not that surprised. BBCP seemed to really fall out of favor when Guilty Gear and Persona came out. I expect to see 0 westerners in the finals for those games and Tekken 7. Out of all the games, I'm probably most excited for MKX. Since it will be new and fresh also it looks pretty great! And I don't even like Mortal Kombat!
No Omega, for shame.
Obviously losing KoF is silly but at least I can safely not watch a whole bunch of Smash.
Ughh not Melee again ... it is so boring to watch and so sad they dropped KOF XIIII and Blazblue , those two games had the hypest moments of last Evo by far. DAMN you MELEEEE!!!!!!
I'm inclined to agree but those entrant numbers during Apex are HUGE. For as much as Smash can get pretty dull to watch for a number of us, viewership-wise its a huge draw.
But man, no KOF is a bummer.
James Chen and David Philip Graham had some interesting things to say about the lack of KoF XIII on UltraChenTV.
Is there an archive of it up already? I haven't been watching UltrachenTV for some time now.
If I can go, I'd enter Tekken 7 and Mortal Kombat X for sure.
Apparently Tekken 7 cabs will support controllers, so you can bring your own. That's crazy awesome.
Looks like I'm going back to EVO for Xrd and Ultra. Might enter MKX if it's any good. Should be a lot of fun like last year.
I'm going to be curious how this whole thing with Tekken 7 plays out. Having a game that's only in arcades and may be hard to get hold of outside SE Asia may skew the field a LOT/completely. Though I guess you could argue BB wasn't much better last year even though people had a shot, they still got wrecked (only dude who made top 8 from the US had to beat Banana Ken to get there not a Japanese player, everyone who played one of the Asians to qualify got destroyed).
Supposedly some events will have the cabs there before Evo, but getting a 2 day window to play (likely w/o training mode just matches) isn't enough time to compete with someone who has the cab somewhere they can regularly get to and play.
